rear crankshaft adaptor removal

Postby jethro » Tue Aug 12, 2014 3:50 pm

I have my Geno's Dodge shop manual CD on order but it has not come yet.
My engine had an Allison transmission on it- (93 12 valve)
I received my adaptor plate and flywheel spacer and motor mounts from destroked.
My engine appears to have an adapter plate (and stub shaft attached- its about 6 inche disk) which is bolted to the rear flange of the
crankshaft. I removed the 8 bolts going through the adaptor into the crank flange. I also un-bolted the rear seal housing
including the 4 bolts through the oil pan. The seal housing is loose now. My question is how do I remove the adaptor
plate - the bolts are all out- I don't want to hit it much because it is attached to the crank.....
I cant seem to slide the seal housing past it- feels like the lip of the seal is behind it....
Does this thing take some kind of puller to remove it ? It LOOKS like the destroked flywheel spacer
would take its place.... (?)

Any hints? Will post a pic if I can figure out how to.....

My guess would be whack it with a hammer, but I'm not looking at it. Maybe hit it gently from one side then the other to see if it comes loose. If the bolts are out it may be just rusted/ stuck on there.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

I tried bumping it gently left and right...... but it sounded solid...... don't want to mess up the crank flange.....
like to get a slide hammer on it somehow..... but the only rim I could hook a puller onto is behind the seal housing....
at the outer edge....

I will try a pic- but it appears to be fairly complex....

the geno's cd with the dodge shop manual should arrive tomorrow..... hopefully it will show that part.....

Durring editing.... I can copy the link out and paste it into my address bar and it DOES go to the dropbox page with my pick....
I think the pick is like 34 Kb- so I wouldn't think that is too big..... here is the link.....

Just hit it with a hammer from the side, its probably just stuck on...and probably will pop off.

Do you need the adapter??? Id just weld a flat piece of steel across and use a slide hammer on it. Or get a bigger
Hammer. Or tap a couple of the holes and use a slide hammer.....then you could still use it if you wanted.

Yup, just smack it! It's stuck to the crank. Your new manual won't show that either, it's not a Dodge thing.

I agree just keep hitting it and it will pop off.

GOT IT !
I decided to try hitting it a little more- thought I could see it move just a little......
about 6 hits- off it came. The adaptor has an ID that just wedges onto the OD of the crank flange.
(I suppose to eliminate any chance of relative movement)
The new space goes on the same way- has the same lip that interference-fits with the rear crank flange !
The rubber seal and gasket looked pretty good - but I have new ones !

I have been studying my engine manual fron Geno's (Bishko CD rom)
Has anyone noticed 2 pages missing ? (p144 and 145)

Thanks for the help !
I have a fuel pump, idler, thermostat, water pump... freeze plugs coming.... repainting block the correct colors....
so I have plenty to do.
