I'm having a similar situtation.
I was talking with DennyT on it, and his thoughts were that, IN MY CASE, it's POSSIBLE that the governor is sticking closed due to old, congealed, WVO in the Injection pump housing, which could be sticking the governor in the de-fueled position.

It'll die off idle, and If I tap on the pump, it will start, but I can't let it idle down.

It does it primarily when it's warm, but it won't idle cold, but it does start when cold.
I bought the truck after it had set for a good while with WVO in the tank, and it started and ran fine.
In a fairly short time (well under a tank of fuel) it went to surging at idle, to it won't start when warm, without tapping on the pump.

If yours set for any time, it's POSSIBLE it's a similar situtation, but it's less likely with "real" diesel fuel.

But it's just a thought to share.

Mark.

Mark,

I saw your post. we just came back from a 6,000 mile ride (my 1st gen is in a 1990 Motorhome.) went north from Oklahoma through Kansas and Nebraska and west to Rapid City area. I actually did get a small (30 gal.) fill of 20% Bio Diesel, but not sure what effect it would have in a 90 gallon tank. In any case I had no problem until almost back home near Albany NY, 2,000 miles from Rapid City. It is a puzzle to me because I don't have much knowledge of the inside of the VE pump, and the fact that it will always start right up with a puff of starter fluid.

Hope we get both problems figured out, Thanks

PS: We went North across Nebraska from Kansas on US 81 to I90. Great ride.

hey-Hey!!!,
Bio-Diesel is a trans-esterized vegi product, which should have none of the gooey, glue-like properties of VO( waste or otherwise ). Mark, it may help to run a few quarts of injector-cleaning solvent through the motor if you've indeed got sticky bits inside of your pump.,
cheers,
Douglas

Nothing against Bio-diesel. There have been discussions on the effect of a switch over on early VE pumps, seals etc. maybe you can fill us in on the latest? Thanks

The bio diesel MAY get past old worn out hardened seals. The bio has way fewer aromatic compounds than regular dino diesel, and when the aromatics are taken out, the old seals can shrink. New seals will fix that issue.

If it is properly distilled and whatnot (i.e. processed, not just straight filtered waste oil), it should perform like regular dino diesel.

Keep in mind, these trucks are old, and most are not worked at the duty cycle of tractors and towing rigs- that alone can cause fuel system issues.

I would try some injector cleaner in it as well. Bio shouldn't cause the problems of wvo. It will however "clean" the fuel tank of any diesel related wax build up which will cause a few filter changes on some trucks. Both my 90 and my 98 run anywhere from 70-100% bio for the warm months and I haven't ever had any bio related problems.

i honestly think western iowa and estern nebraska got a batch of bad diesel fuel. cause for the past 3 weeks i have been having fuel problems like crazy! liek one day i was jsut driving down the interstate and noticed some white smoke out of the stack, then a minute later it turned into a miss then when i got it home it turned into a heavy miss at rpm and a rough idle. noticed it had fuel coming outta #2 and #3 exhaust ports. so pulled injectors took em in and both were stuck wide open and the rest were really sticky. i had ran these injectors for 10 months without a problem. so my guy stood up for his work and gave me 2 injectors and throughly cleaned and reset the injectors. got them back in the truck and ran great for a week then same thing but it was #1 injector stuck open. so my guy warrantied another injector for me and now she has been running a week and no symptoms yet. but this time its being fed by a holley blue and filtered by 2 large fuel filters and 1/2" lines.

Thanks for the info. Interesting. I'll have to check where I fueled on the way back.
I just finished getting out all six injectors. Pretty nasty looking and hard to get 2 of them out. It looks like a long time problem in my case.
Hard to believe it ran at all. I'll post the results. I was getting the slow start before I left for the West. Joe G.

The guy that has one of my old trucks just had his injectors reset after a no run issue. I even tried to bleed and frig with it for 2 hours with no luck. It ended up being stuck injectors as well. I had never heard of all 6 injectors friggin up at the same time. He sent it to an injection shop and they found the problem. He has been driving for 2 weeks now and its fixed. :?:

I haven't gotten the details on my injectors yet from the rebuilder. I've never seen one out before, so I can't judge, but I can say couldn't see the atomizer holes in 5 of them. All covered in carbon. Had to "jack" the last one out. Really stuck in there. 21 years in place. Thanks

I have yet to get my pump swap finished, but I honestly think, in my case, the pump has physical wear damage that was compounded by heat.
I'm intending to swap the stock injectors out for some PODs, once I get the other IP mounted in, at which point I'll see what my tips look like.
Then it's dissection time on the pump.

It's been so darn hot here, that I'm absolutely REFUSING to pull parts, let alone work on oily junk in high heat/humidity.

Yeah, I'm a wimp.
