throttle link mod-er-fyed

Postby ahale2772 » Wed Apr 13, 2011 5:17 am

decided to fix my throttle travel issue (Pete, you called it), my throttle arm was hitting the inlet line beforte it hit the high idle stop, and the high idle was out about 1/4 inch.

took the whole cam link setup off and used an old mount I found in my box of carb goodies. (I like the fact that I can actually get to my fuel filter now :))

the throttle pulls ssssooooOOOOOOooo much smoother now, it used to "cam over" and give me a sunnen burst of rpms.

apparently I was missing out on a bunch of fuel , It pulls harder than when it had the hx35 on it with three screws on the pump!

I highly reccomend doing this.... (if not just indexing your throttle)

The pic is sized correct for me. What " style " of forum view do you have? I have " serenity " style and I like that one the best. Go to your " user control panel " then click on " board preferences " under the " edit global settings " look and see what " my board style " you have. I know on some styles the pics appear different and you have to scroll side to side to see it.

Also if you had moved the linkage to the hole where your spring is hooked, you could have done the same thing with less work. ;)

I was on the preference mathx...or something I allready forgot what its called, serenity is nice but kinda hard to see when there is a new post on a topic.

I know I could have moved the link but I was having issues with that pivot point thing anyways, It was alltogether missing the plastic bushing that it should have...?.... owner before me must have removed it....

I like how this way there is nothing blocking my filter, I may try and eliminate the whole big angled bracket (I need to with that crazy manifold I build anyways)

it would be nice to see the Injector lines and be able to get in behind there

There's a reason Rich uses " Serenity". ;)

Alex, that looks good. Tim Worline pointed out the throttle lever/ fuel line thing to me one day. I gained a 1/4 inch of travel. I had to look about 3 times to realize what you did with the cable and screw widget. Just make sure with the pedal on the floor that you're not pulling too far on the breakover spring. That's the one between the throttle levers. At WOT the top lever should just open the spring ends.

Nice mod. 8)

I've been debating on ditching

anyways, since I don't have cruise or a kick-down cable laying around, I also seem to have a cammy feeling to my throttle that I'd like to get rid of.

yeah Pete, it just pulls on that spring when its a wot, those throttle levers still perplex me, the setup of my truck (original auto) and the spare motor ive got( 5 speed) are totally different, mine looks like a 3 year old dreamed up a lever setup with 40 springs

Levi, it truly pulls 100% better, much easier to drive now on the highway because its so sensitive

Thought I'd bump this since I had to look through your posts to find it.

Nice thread title. :P

I finally got around to doing this on my truck and between this and milling the AFC top my low-RPM smoke problems are finally gone. It really is a much nicer, more linear throttle to drive with now.

Also, who are you trying to fool with that smoke screw tamper cap still on there? Those non-factory Allen head bolts holding the AFC cap on are totally giving you away.

holy... mine totally hits the inlet line before getting to WOT... do you just remove the entire cam dealio and set up some kind of rigged throttle or can you cut a bit of the cam deal off or something?

My linkage looks different than the one he has pictured there as well, I'll try to grab a pic tomorrow.

Mine also hits my inlet line, but it's after it's traveled a long way around. I actually asked back when I first started playing with the throttle if it could be over-rotated. Never did get a real answer.

who me???

yeah the whole "cam-over" feel of the throttle is gone, which makes it more linear, I agree, it feels better.

and yeah, I bent the crap out of my inlet line to get it to not hit, i think it still taps it at wot but not to the point where its stopping any more travel

Here's mine.

Image

And here's my even-more-in-the-way fuel line:

That's about as far as I can eg it to open. I have been eyeballing that little bolt you see under the inlet line. It looks to hold the throttle linkages together and mine has some slot to give up. Is that what ghat bolt does, and can it be moved by just loosening it?

EDIT: and no hassling about that weld-job. I had just tacked it to see if it worked.

Levi,

I have asked Pete that question before, my pump also has that little bolt with the slot under it, I think if you move it it screws up your idle setting....other than that ive got no clue what its there for, mine has a hole on the top plate and a little raised nipple (must be cold) that fits into the hole, so technically it seems to only want to go one way

just take the die grinder to the part that is hitting the inlet line, thats what i did ;-)

edit, you can see how mine is moved and ground in that first picture

my truck is an early 89, and the spare motor i have (early 91) has a totally different throttle setup on it (like the one on yours)

....i dont get it :?:

The IP died on this truck at around 100k, and dad put another one on it. I have no idea where it came from or anything, I just know it was painted Cummins Beige instead of the Black dodge sprayed on them.

I've got it moving as far as it did with the old pivot-thingy, so I'm happy with it. No cutting for me.

Yet.
