VE shutoff solenoid HELP

Postby TRACTJDS0428 » Sat Jul 13, 2013 7:33 pm

This will be kinda long but in the interest of symptoms i believe i need to give details. I have a 93 with a VE and it has been eating shutoff solenoids for a while. you guys have already told me i need bigger injectors or turn the pump down. i haven't messed with the pump yet and just replaced the solenoid on Monday hoping to just take it easy till i get bigger injectors and not destroy another solenoid. On Tuesday i got behind a slow car going about 40 or so and decided to pass so i laid it down because another vehicle was coming towards us and i had time if the truck did what it normally did. well it lit and i got almost around and it de-fueled. lost everything for about 5 seconds then the fuel came back and i got around but it was close at that point. My question is, has anybody had this problem? If so what did you do to fix it or get around it? at this point id rather go back to a manual shutoff and get the power back. It seems to me that maybe the solenoid isn't strong enough to hold the plunger undo full throttle. Or i have bigger problems. Im fairly skilled so just looking for some ideas and people who know more about VE's and how they work.

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge?

Sounds like a dirty fuel filter maybe...

But check the connection of the wire on the FSS. Also, the more it eats, the more likely rubber from the plunger will end up somewhere down the line in the fuel system. :yuck:

i do have a fuel pressure gauge but its in-op at the moment. seems to like eating sending units as well. i checked the wires when i got home and took it out again and was able to do it on command. its almost like shutting the key off which leads me to the solenoid. didn't have any trouble before i changed it. and as for the rubber, I'm sure its where it shouldn't be but i don't know if its worth taking the pump out just to have somebody clean it?

If you think it is the solenoid, just pull it...remove the plunger and spring...and put it back on. See what it does. Only thing is if your only problem is a loose connection, then you did all that for nothing and still didn't find the true problem.

Back when I had a working FSS, I had a similar issue when goofing around and stomping the throttle to the floor and then lifting. The wire terminal was loose and when the engine torqued back and forth it was loosing connection and shutting off.

Ok repaired and cleaned all the connections and thought i was good. but today it left me on the side of the road. as i had just changed the solenoid alittle over a week ago i still had the old one and all the tools in the truck so i swapped them out real quick on the side of the road. went about a mile and it started doing it agian. this time not as bad. it runs up to about what i think would be 1800 rpm and starts loping like crazy. ill post a video. I need to figure this out as it is my daily driver and any info at all would be appreciated.

I checked power to the solenoid while its loping and the power is constant. with all the smoke i dont feel like its a filter issue but tomorrow im getting a filter and changing it for process of elimination.

It may be a filter. Does it smoke when you punch it going down the road? At idle it uses hardly any fuel so it will smoke, but driving it uses a lot more so it may not smoke.

ok after rereading i just went out and pulled the guts out of my solenoid and she runs like a pickle seeder. SO, do i have some faulty new solenoids or do i have a pump problem causing a vacuum in the solenoid passage that is pulling the plunger away from the magnet?? i just bought these solenoids two weeks ago online. And all Ive had is problems since i installed these new ones. But the tip was blown off my old one so it would have let fuel flow open or closed.
