Afc and exhaust housing

Postby dyne_79 » Tue Apr 22, 2014 7:59 am

Several questions: when adjusting the starwheel up, I've noticed you can't go very high until the fuel pin is making contact with the afc top. This causes the pin to be pushed in when reinstalling the top effectively giving more fuel before boost. Can you grind the afc top around the smoke screw to keep the fuel pin from being depressed on installation? Trying to reduce my truck's smoke.

Next question is about exhaust housings. I have a 93 5 speed with mild pump tuning. Maybe 2 turns in on the power screw. Spool up is great in 4th and 5th gear but very scarce in 3rd. My egts never see above 900 and I get 20psi max. I will be using it to pull things at some point but not currently. I'm considering a 14cm exhaust housing. My truck runs great but I think it's driveability would be greatly increased with a quicker spool up. I also think a better spool would help my smoke. The smoke clears pretty well once the boost comes in. What can I expect this to do to my egts and boost? Will a 14cm housing give me problems towing heavy? This is a budget work truck, not a hot rod.

AFC adjustments - Yes! you are on the right path. Mill/grind whatever you can to get that fuel pin up higher.

Turbine housing - I'm personally a fan of the 12 housings... but either way, anything smaller than a 16 will run better but you'll want a wastegated housing.

Does anyone have pictures of an afc top that has had some grinding? I'd sure hate to grind through it!

I've been looking for an hx35 for sometime now. I think that would suit my needs wheel. Or even a wh1c. But I can't seem to track one down in this area... that's why I'm looking into just an exhaust housing swap. Is it possible to get away without a wastegate on a 14? I don't think a 16 would justify the purchase. My truck is tuned pretty mild

Is it possible? Yes, but you'll not be able to pull as hard as it is capable of. Personally I feel you'd be fine.

I'm pretty sure tacoclaw has pictures some where in his build thread I believe. M&H makes a spacer also to raise the top.

You can go with a he351cw aswell, it has a small housing (good for us 5spd folks).

I tow 12k behind mine without any issues. Running 40psi and close to stock timing.

Yep the he351cw is an AWESOME turbo.

How much weight do you plan on towing? I agree with RCC, go with a 12 housing unless you are pulling 10K+ AND in the mountains. I have pulled 12k all across the prairies (yes we have some good hills too) and have never had issues with being too hot or not enough power.

A friend of mine has an 06 dodge and we go to the mountains sledding in the winter, he pulls a 7000# enclosed trailer plus 4 sleds/4 people/gear/fuel/beer/etc. (~11k or so) and he has never had any issues or wanting of more. Same turbo (he351cw), albiet the 06 has a better breathing engine.

I'll probably pull between 10 and 15k. Construction materials, dirt and smaller farm equipment. I live on the California coast. Very rural area. I very rarely see open highway. I do a lot of 30 to 55 mph driving through twisty, hilly terrain but not much for long, high grades. I don't see 5th gear often

DodgeFreak, that's a Dick move to send someone into my thread blind like that.

Here's what my AFC top looks like, I just machined it even with the bottom of the smoke screw threads. I assume you could machine it until the screw only had a couple of threads to hold on to, but I wouldn't trust it to stay in.

That looks very good. Guess there's a lot of thickness to play with. I'll break out the die grinder when I have the chance.

I have a 366 spring on the way. I know that will help my low end driveability. I don't make boost in 3rd until it's just about time to shift up, and even then it only hits maybe 7 psi for half a second. No boost in low or second (I have 4.10s) Really want more response out of the turbo

I figured he might get a lil useful info out of it.....and a lot crap also :D. Plus I really didn't feel like digging through all the bs to find it. I dug through it to find out what blower you used and it took me an hour.....lol

Youll enjoy that 12cm housing with your 5spd. I plan on swapping a gated 12 on mine when I have the time. My old crew had one and it ran good for no more than was done to it.

So the question is can I get by with a non wastegated 14? Given my driving conditions and mild tuning?
