Manifold paint reccomendations

Postby jethro » Sat Sep 13, 2014 11:55 pm

just got a new manifold. Want to paint it while it is still nice and clean.
Which paint will stand the heat and not disintegrate ?
Should I dip it into an ospho-water mix to phosphate it before painting ? or just rinse it with solvent and paint it ?

I am guessing that this and the turbo housing will be the hottest parts.......
Hearing about your experiences would be lovely !

Thanks----

Best thing would be a ceramic coat or powder coat I would think. The manifold gets really hot.

Powder coat won't hold up unless they have some high heat stuff I don't know about. Buddy had the muffler on his tractor done, lasted 3 months and then flaked off.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

There is header paint that's rated at 1200 degrees. This stuff was the first thing that popped up. Will last for a little while.

Autozone sells a 2000 degree engine paint. That's what is going on mine. I painted the tractor manifold with it and it has lasted ok. Cylinder temps on it have been 1600.

I will look for the 2000 degree autozone paint. I figures powder coat wouldn't go nearly hot enough.....
There used to be a tan colored stuff that was baked on in a kiln - but I don't know if that is done anymore. It had a kind of
porous look to it...... don't know if I ever knew the name. Could be dangerous to heat a cast iron part that much- it might decide to change shape a little and screw you up on the fit to the block......

Go with 2000 degree stuff.....

Thanks for the info ! The engine is looking much nicer as I am getting things cleaned and painted......
Id post a reply but I havnt figured out how to do it from drop box....

Thanks for the replies !

I've had prety good luck with the "VHT" paint the autoparts stores sell. Just pay attention to the instructions. Its prety fragile until its fully cured.

I'm sporting the 2000* engine paint on my manifold, holding up just fine. I did however blast the manifold before painting, removing any rust.

I got the VHT in red-
I degreased it with brake cleaner- warmed it with heat gun- hung it from wires and sprayed it.
I would bake it in the oven but it would probably smoke up the house !
(and I would be in the dog house--- :jocolor:

Will be a little while before it gets heated "naturally"

Thanks- Tim

It does stink when you try to bake it in the oven.. I got in trouble over it when I painted the exhaust heat shield on my 400ex and tried that :yuck:
