What alt is on an 89 5.9?

Postby mattme » Wed Jan 09, 2008 10:55 am

I am looking for information on the alternator that would have been used on an 89 with a cummins.

I have searched and not found any useful info.

Thanks,

Matt

Matt, what do you need to know? How to wire it into your conversion?
pete

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Nah, just trying to find out the specs for it. Brand, amp rating, model, how reliable they are. That find of stuff.

The hook up should be start forward, two wires from the alt and a switched power wire to the ext. regulator and one to the battery.

PS I got some pictures of the swap up here: http://www.cummins-conversion.com/photo ... 39&cat=500

I know that mine is a Nippendenso 120 amp and from what i learned from the alt. shop (cause i put a internal reg. in mine) is that they are pretty reliable. some trucks also carry the Chrysler brand alternator 120 amp.
hope this helps...

That looks pretty good! When you get ready to hop it up, let me know!
Just so you know, both small wires are switched, regulator goes in the dark green one, which would be the bottom small terminal. It also has it's own ground wire.

My FSM says Nippondenso, 120 amps.

I was going to wire in the regulator like this

http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/faq/ ... lynewfaq=1

As far as the hop ups, already started ;) Bumped the pump timing up, fuel screw collar is taken off and the 12 cm housing will be on, plus still need to install the 3rd gen intercooler.

I've never seen it done that way. The service manual shows power to both terminals and all the ones I ever messed with were the same way. If it works, and according to him it does, do it! :D
Don't forget to turn or grind the fuel cone, 366 governor spring, and back out the high idle screw. ;-)

What I mean is, when you get it done, I'll come out and tune it for you. :hs:
