Lobster fishing story

Postby Richie O » Mon Jul 20, 2009 7:32 pm

Well a couple of lobsterman on an island near here got in a fight about fishing. One pulled a gun and shot the other in the neck. Makes me want to hurry up and get my traps in the water. :D If anybody wants to be my stearnman make sure you bring a bullet proof vest and a AK-47. 8)

Yes I have seen video of it. He ran in the races with it. Let me dig around for a video. I know he raced it in Rockland which is 20 mins south of me. I missed that race this year. :x

And by the way the guy that shot the other lobsterman is already out on bail.

Here is the skiff with the sunbird on it. It is in one of the races filmed.

Rich, what's with the clams? I read that some (little necks?) have red algae and can poison you, so they pulled them off the shelves and replaced them with Mahogonys? I didn't read the whole article, just skimmed the headlines. That's gotta hurt the fishing industry.

Well Pete, we have had so much rain that lots of bacteria have gotten into the ocean because of nasty run off. Lots of public sewer departments as well as private sewer systems can fail at the rainfall we have been seeing. That bacteria causes a large amount of marine plankton called RED TIDE. It makes you sick as hell if you eat it. It does not effect lobsters or crabs but any clams, mussles seem to be the problem. The Department of Marine Resources checks the water quality and re open as soon as the water clears. It sure puts a strain on the clammers and all the buisnesses that get money from them. They can be out of work for weeks at a time.

That's gotta suck! Thanks for the schoolhouse. I've heard of the red tide before and wasn't sure what it was exactly.

we get red tides down here too. mostly in lake ponchatrain after they open the bonne carrie spillway to let excess mississippi river water flow into the lake to keep New Orleans from becoming a pool again. the fresh water allows for algea blooms that causes all kinds of problems. doesn't last very long though.
