Come along/puller

Looking for a come along/winch puller. Prefer cheap as usual. Won't get used very often. Just winched a 87 W350 with a flatbed up on the trailer with a RATCHET STRAP . I figure just about anything is better than a ratchet strap. What do you guys think about this one? http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/d ... number=543

Aside from the fact it will probably break at the exact moment you really need it, it'll do great! I stopped frequenting that place after the third time the tool/thing I got there did just that. Then I would get all pissed and go buy the good one I should have in the first place.

Find a good used 3/4 ton gear reduction chain type similar to this one:

If you aren't going to use it very often it probably will work for you. Tools that are cheap in price are usually poor in quality. I used to buy cheap tools to use on the farm, I don't any more becouse they don't last when they are used hard.

Last "come along" I bought was in Home Depot 3 years ago and it has stood he test of time with me.
If you can find them, the brand is "Masdan", or something like that, they have a cable protector/surface plate made of STEEL, not tin, and with this type of puller, that makes all the difference in the world when pulling on a flat surface.
I do believe they are US Made,even if they aren't, they ARE well built.
It was a bit pricey, too.
No chains in the way, either.

I have worked for a rigging supply company for 13 years. Buy a chain hoist don't waist your money on a cable type.

Wish you lived closer to me I have several used one's laying all over the place we can't sell to customers but can be used for home projects all day long.

I have a yale chain hoist and can't emagine anything it won't do. but if i'm in my barn i push a button.

Bill, I have three of the cable come alongs from HF, last May I was winching a half ton Chevy on a trailer when the cable snapped and the truck rolled off the trailer. It left an impressive welt across my shoulders. Upon further inspection the cable was of inferior quality, and seemed barely rated for 1000lbs opposed to the advertised 8000lbs. The guy I bought the truck from had an electric winch off a boat trailer and we chained it to my trailer, ran some jumper cables to it and pulled the truck on, no problem.
I am currently designing a new car trailer to be built down the road, and I am having a hydraulic winch mounted on the front with 3/8 cable.

Bob, you're lucky it was only a 1/2 ton chevy. If it was a real truck like a dodge you might not have a head now.

I knew I would be heckled for the Chevy in the post. I did drive a Dodge to pick it up in Maryland. All the power sat behind the steering wheel of that beast though

I've got my hands on one similar to this. A quality unit/brand not a cheap HF unit. My only concern is it says 3/4 ton capacity. Although I'm told the 3/4 ton capacity is it's lifting/overhead capacity, not pulling. Is this correct? Will this chain setup pull a 8k pound pickup truck up onto a trailer safely? Thanks.

i would say it should work. i have cable come along with a 2 ton rating. i have had this since i was 10 and beat teh he!! out of it and it still keeps on pullin. like being a 65-70lb 10 year old that does alot of things with equipment that 5x your weight you learn to love mechanical advantage and gear reduction! lol but yeah from gettign teh quad un burried without dad knowin or moving the boat trailer around the garage and nothaving anykeys for vehicles, so you use a few chains and a come along. i have probably pulled a total of a mile with a load on that thing! i want a chain hoist badly tho. have had my eye out for a good one. but my 2 ton cable hoist has pulled vehicles weighing 8k with minimal effort, the chain hoist should have a lower gear ratio so should be simple i would think
