Things I have learned about this weekend....

Postby oldestof11 » Sun Mar 07, 2010 6:17 pm

I decided to to write a bit about my experiences that I have learned since last Friday.

I cannot replace U-joints with a MAPP/Oxy torch setup and a big C clamp. Nor does a BFH with said mini torch work. Requires a 6 sided 8mm or 5/16's socket for the rear straps.

The new breed of people at O'Reilly's do not know sh*t. Gave me the wrong carrier bearing. The problem? The last number on the box I needed was a 8, not the number 6 which had a smaller ID for the GAS version.

You do not need a press for the carrier bearing but do need a BFH, claw hammer, and a pry bar.

U-joints are very nice when they have bearings in them.

Looked through the receipts from the previous owner. Things listed as fixed or noted to be a problem are:

Headlamp switch replace and associated wiring. But the "hard wired the main power to the switch" (???? gotta check that one)
Lots of oil leaks on a engine with 55,000 miles on a FRESH rebuild, also uses oil.
Lift pump replaced 4000 miles ago due to fuel pressure being up to spec's.
A oil change at the dealer who serviced this truck, and where I bought it from, costs $120.xx 2 years ago. The main ticket? 3 gallons of oil for $75, not including disposal ($10). The rest is the filter ($15) and labor ($20).
Do not go to a place towed by a tow-truck. A no start situation arises. Mechanics check the "glow plugs". Cannot find problem. Towed to dealer. They find the shutdown solenoid connection corroded. Replace solenoid to the tune of $150. $8X.xx for the SDS.

Also, IL I-Pass people are BLANKING IDIOTS! I get a notice in the mail last Monday about me not paying tolls. I had the I-Pass registered and they state in the letter, if I have a account in GOOD standing, check on the website tonight. Nothing....???? Check letter, I just missed the deadline to request a hearing. Check the website info, THEY ******* PUT THE WRONG LETTER IN FOR THE LICENSE PLATE! The guy asked me to spell it, I tell him. He asks me 3 SEPARATE TIMES, is that a N. NO, M as in MOM I told him. Didn't matter. Now I have to pay $65.xx in fines cause the STUPID TRANSPONDER DIDN'T TAKE!

And the truck does no more than 87 mph.

Wow, I only have to deal with a trucking dispatcher who cant decide from day to day whether or when he wants me to drive. And then, he cant give me any f*cking notice.....

Not even going to comment on the horseowners who want a cheesedick $40-50 cold shoe job with keg shoes.

Come on over- I'll buy the beer.

Party in Missouri! 8) I think I'll be ready for a beer about 9:30 tomorrow. Morning, that is. I need to pull the carrier out of the rear of the wifes jeep and see if I can rebearing the POS and get the howl to go away. Is 3/16 too much backlash on a D35?
