Well money is hitting the ground at the house and so is the foot/hoof rot :?
In two weeks I've had 4 calves drop and one unexpected from a 16month old yearling. I'm very greatful that non had to be pulled, especially the yearlings calf. That cow was and had been separated from the bull since it's purchase when it was 6 months old. Very weird deal,my bull must be a long distance shooter

With the price of cattle like it is that's a chunk of change :)

The foot rot came in with a damn cow I got from a friend that was selling out. It was his wife's pet,and she wouldn't let it got to the stock yard to be sold. Of course I'm a big a$$ sucker and said it could run with mine and now I get the freakin problems  I guess it could be worse, that rot is nothing to ignore but simple topical doctoring takes care of it if caught soon enough.....

Do you ever name them after what they'll end up as? (Ie: steak, roast, etc)

That calf looks silver in color. What breed(s)?

All we ever had was boring old Herefords before switching to Angus 10 years ago. Now we rent the pasture to a guy with Shorthorns and I truly believe they are the stupidest breed out there.

Caleb they're brangus cows. Less issues with deases and large calves ...... Supposedly. The last bunch I had were whatever's. Those were a bunch of trouble, I pulled all of their calves, that got old really fast and I sold them.

Never had foot rot tho

Ellis, I forgot that it's 110 degrees and 200% humidity from March to October down there  I doubt the breeds we have up here would like the heat.

Dar, you'll miss them for a while and then when your pockets start filling up with hay money, it'll be all better 8)

Yeah the money tends to run thin fooling with these things, but it's worth it to me just to know where my meat comes from.

I'm fixin to start messing with a small number of chickens, just haven't made up my mind which breed I want yet. I want something that yields a lot of meat but can also throw out eggs.

check out black australorp's. They are a heavy breed that lays half decent to boot. Have you considered getting meat birds for meat and laying hens for eggs instead of a dual purpose bird? I raise these...

They grow a bit slower than the commercial cornish cross, but have almost none of the heart/lung/bone development issues.
