Anyone good with computers? (MAC)

Postby peobryant » Mon Nov 30, 2009 12:21 am

My father recently bought a "display" iMac from BestBuy. It has been a good computer, except for one thing. Whenever we put something on it, and restart the computer, it will delete everything and restore it's default settings.

My dad is a huge picture guy, he loves taking them, and has a huge collection of them. When we go the computer (I think it was a Black Friday deal) he put all the pictures he took from Thanksgiving and put them on here. He then deleted them from the camera, because they were on the computer and didn't think anything of it. Well, like I said, after we installed an update, every single picture was deleted, as well as the other programs we had installed on it.

When he bought if from BestBuy, they said something about needing to find some CD's to "restore it's settings" but they couldn't find it, but said it should be fine. I told him to take it to BestBuy and demand they fix it, but I figured if it was something easy (none of us are good with computers) we might as well save the trip.

Thanks for the help,

Parker

Take it back and bitch like hell. It doesn't work, and you paid for it working. There shouldn't be a problem returning it or getting another one. If there is, start getting loud, they'll do anything to keep you quiet. ;)

We have no problem taking it back up, but he's been pretty busy transporting prisoners this week, so I figured I try and get some information and see if I can fix it without taking it back. Generally, the employees at BestBuy don't argue with someone in uniform.

To save yourself the headache of hauling the thing back and forth, and the potential to damage it, just demand the startup disks.

The deal is that it is set up for in store display (doh!) which does exactly like you say, and resets everything anytime the power is cycled. This is to repair anything that some jacko does to it throughout the day. Once you get those disks, lemme know with a PM or something and I'll get you the appropriate info.

Thanks Dave, I really appreciate it. I'll try to head up there in the morning and get the disks. It's actually a really nice computer and we got a very good deal on it, but I feel bad that it deleted all his Thanksgiving pictures.

Again, I appreciate it, and I'll shoot you a PM when I get the disks.
