We have lots of old tired 7.3 and 7.3 powerstrokes around my part of NC, and hearing all their woes is one reason I waited a few years to find the right cummins.
I have a neighbor down the street just restored a old diesel vw rabbit. Fixed the body and completely rebuilt the engine. He put a variable vane turbo setup on it as well, added oil squirters and the works. From what he says it will actually go past 55mph now 'at least twice as fast'.
Had a pic of it but the phone died- will try to upload one soon. He rigged up a cool 2-stage vacuum actuator setup to run the vanes. No boost it was fully closed, then it opens up to stage 2 at around 8psi, then opens the vanes fully at 15psi or so. Was thinking of using one if the turbo on the dodge every goes out. Just looks like 4 or 5 hard vacuum lines and vac switches so I guess it really isn't as interesting as it works or sounds.
Just be patient and wait for the right 1st gen~ my only regret on mine is the lack of manual transmission but everything else was a good start.
Edit: how I was able to find it and my recent vw bug was a craigslist app on my phone that emails you when new trucks/cars with certain keywords are posted. I am always first in their driveway now that I can keep up with that.
