Stop Buying Reman Master Cylinders

Postby 142autox » Mon Nov 26, 2012 5:34 pm

I've gone through 4 warranty remans and each had lackluster braking, some scarier than others. The last one was the best with a lot of spongey feel and required a football field to stop it from 60. Then it too failed, and when the pedal on a dually hits the floor when you're approaching stopped traffic it feels like you're accelerating.

I bought a new one today, cost almost $80 instead of the $20 for one that has been re-re-re-re-remaned. Now the brakes feel solid.

My theory on the remans is they must hone out the bore everytime thus making the cylinder volume greater, a smaller bore master sends more hydraulic pressure to the slaves and calipers right? Then probably using the same plungers making the seals more prone to failure. Just a theory...

Youre not alone in your findings. I've heard this before a time or three.

I'm in 2 or 3 masters so far, all remans, all doing the same thing. I've also got a weak-ish booster helping out.

I would buy new stuff but I use stories about my brakes like boogie man stories, mostly to keep chicks from wanting to drive it.

Where'd you get you new master at? I can hold out forever.

I just meant that I will add your story to all the others as experience when I need a master cylinder. Yours, as well as the others, have convinced me that a new master is a no-brainer and not to even waste time with a reman.

Or, you could convert it to hydroboost and never have crappy brakes again ;) I scored another low mileage hydroboost set up for less than $100. Just my $0.02

I got mine from O'Reilly's. I'm sure you can get it from anywhere but they've been the best parts house I've worked with and they had it in stock.

Replaced pads, shoes, axle seals, etc today now it's starting to feel like a normal truck. I've never seen more of a mess inside drums before. The drivers side shoes were swapped, the adjuster was in backwards and the axle seal was leaking. Most of the inside was caked in a tar of brake dust and axle grease. The pass side was mostly dry and assembled properly but the shoe linings were broken into puzzle pieces. They must have done that side before they were too drunk.

Hydroboost sounds nice but I don't think it would have fixed any of the issues I had.

You can get new Bendix made in the USA master cylinders on rockauto. My Bendix fixed my brake pedal not returning problem.

Same here. After strike 3 I bought a new Bendix one. All of them leaked internally.

I just put a reman on from autozone and from the initial test drive it works fine. Much better than the one that was on it thats for sure. If I have any issues I'll post on here.

Mine was amazing at first too. Then ever so slowly the pedal wouldn't return. You would push in the pedal to stop and it would return sllllowwwwww. I bled, and deleted ABS, adjusted drums, everything...eventually it got to the point where my pedal was fully manual. Finally bought a Bendix and installed...it was perfect. I prefer bleeding masters with lines into the reservoir instead of the plugs. I hate the idea of building up that kind of pressure with the plugs just to bleed.
