D70 problems

Postby 1STGENFARMBOY » Mon Aug 23, 2010 9:27 pm

Last weekend i pulled some good loads of tractors and noticed when i turned pretty sharp with a load
the rear end seemed like it didn't want to unlock, it would quiver as i went around the turn, just seemed
like the limited slip was very limited indeed. please tell me i can just change the fluid and add some
additive. I did get under the truck and feel how hot it was, and it was HOT but i would expect it to
have some heat after pullin 14,000lbs for a good long hour in 95* heat.

thanks Dar

If its the friction disc type changin the grease will help. I'd put reagular old dino dodo GL5 in it with that limited slip add in there. Dino is thicker and slicker than any syn. Plus being GL5 it already has the friction modifier in it the other is back up.

My 93 does that all the time. I need to change the oil and put in the additive and try that. Never seem to have the time ( or energy ) Plus it smells like hell. :D

In MY experience, by the time it starts grabbing around corners, it's time for LS clutches. Not a bad job, and I think they are <$100. When you refill it, use a good synthetic and *2* tubes of Mopar/ Dana friction modifier (though the Motorcraft FM is working well in my pickup thus far). Better to slip a little than grab too much, in my opinion, esp on a highway vehicle.

If you need any help with it, you got my number.

Syn grease breaks down over time sooner that reg grease. Nobody ever thinks about changin the axle grease and it goes bad and ruins the gears and bearings. Chevy ford and dodge rear ends have been filled with it and I have replaced several rearends in all of them. Mostly half ton but still the same principle. Fords have rounded teeth on their spiders that when in a bind push out against the friction packs to stop the slip. I have also seen in the fords the axle stem worn beyond repair in as few as 80,000 miles. Chevy has a total diff set up that has had the same problem with stickin. Dodge rears just wear out. I don't know why but I belive that it is due to syn grease. Now I say again that this is in half ton pickups. Ask anybody that has a jeep grand cherokee. They eat them like candy, 4x4 modles. I wouldn't putt it in any thing that is worked hard.
