How to get to evaporator to clean it?

Postby Diesel » Thu Jul 07, 2011 7:35 pm

There are leaves and such in my evaporator box...how hard is it to drop the box to clean it out?

you can do this

I'd start by pulling the fan motor and see if I could reach anything. I've seen where some have cut a hole next to the air return inside to clean the evap core but I'm not a fan of that approach, its whatever floats your boat. :D

Why is everyone afraid to drop the box out? :?

I do them all the time just by loosening the dash up and propping up the passenger's side, slightly.
The trick is that once you have the box loose from the firewall, sitting on the floor, (with no blower motor inside) you roll it 1/4 turn forward, then it slides right out from under the dash.

I have only done a few more than 4 this way, so I might be a little inexperienced. ;)

How does that work? If there is an easy way without cutting I'd like to know.

Thanks,

Do them like you are supposed to, remove them and take them apart.

The biggest complaint is usually getting the box out of the truck, it's not really all that hard, even with the dash installed.
Cutting holes is easy, but you still don't get to what's on the front side of the cores, the stuff that the blower can push into the cores.

I just removed a HVAC box from my RamCharger, which had mice in it.
I was tempted to cut the box like others had, but I went ahead and removed it and dis-assembled it.
It was just as well I did, because they had gotten into the blower motor area, packed it totally full of firewall insulation and also filled it with urine and crap.
There was no shortcut for that, it absolutely had to come out and come apart.

For prevention of future buildup in the HVAC box, remove the wipers, then the wiper cowl cover and install a screen wire mesh into the cowl area.
Then you can keep it cleaned off by washing it out whenever you wash the truck.
