Its TIRE TIME!!!

Postby Diesel » Sat May 28, 2011 7:37 am

I had a sidewall let go a couple weeks ago and I think its time for 2 new rear tires. Fronts are good. Trucks 2wd. I would like tires that hold the road well and especially around curves so I don't fishtail with all that torque . I also need a tire that will allow me to be able to drive around in slightly rugged terrain as needed. What do you guys think of the Yokohama AT/S? How about the BFG Commercial Traction tires?

The yoko's I had bounced like a mother, I couldn't keep them balanced. I've also ran Bfg's and it was the best tire I've had on my truck for pulling. They were good for pushing around the heavy nose of the truck in sand.
I can say to run like hell away from kumho tires if you pull. I've less than 12,000 miles on a set and had one peel its cap while hauling my tractor. Now I'm sporting 2 goodyear MTR's on the rear. Got to love that mud grip tire noise :yuck:

I got the Yokohamas but made sure they were not the made in china ones that are tough to balance. These should balance out quite well. Discount tire really stepped up too. They have this link on each tire page where you can show them if there is a lower price. Well discount was cheaper to begin because they include shipping in the tire price but technically tirerack was cheaper. Wouldn't you know - discount tire charged me only $6 more per tire than tirerack but with shipping included! $127 per tire shipped for AT/S Yokohamas is a literal steal.

I have the BFG Commercials on my 91. So far they have done everything I needed them to do. They replaced a set of Cooper Discoverer AT's that went bad. Very disappointed in Cooper on that one. Side walls started cracking badly and they refused to do anything about them.

I'll probably have these tires on the truck in about a week and I'll do a gooooood report for you guys. My gut reaction is that I obviously bought them based on price but they are a highly regarded name brand and the tires are 10ply E-load. Retreaded tires can't be had for $127.00 shipped, let alone a name brand with warranty. Should I have replaced the fronts too?

Alright the Yokohama AT/S seem like decent tires. Real solid construction, good ride, and run quiet. For $127 a tire shipped I don't think I can go wrong.

I was running a spare General until I got the Yokohamas. It was a stout tire for being a spare but dollar for dollar the General costs more than the Yokohama I purchased. The Yokohama's I have are the cheapest new name brand tire in our trucks 235/85-16 size.

I've had EXCELLENT service out of Mastercraft tires. Balance well, long life, good price. I should see 50-60K out of the Courser CTs on my pickup now (similar to a MT, but with siping in the tread blocks, not quite as noisy), and they plowed through a foot of snow in the Rockies without slipping AT ALL; do well on snow and ice in the midwest. ALso dragged a horse trailer through a mile of field road with a foot of standing water to get Mom's horses to dry ground. THrew mud everywhere on that one.

For a 2wd, if you dont do a lot of back road/ field driving in your 2wd, the Courser LT would do well. The HTR is a highway tread with a 60K warranty, I believe, even on the 10ply tires. Last ones I got were $120ea installed.
