Steering box and link suggestions?

Postby Ironforger » Sat Jul 23, 2011 11:30 am

Ok, i think this is a typical problem. Too much play in steering wheel. Adjusting the steering gear only makes it harder to return without helping the play. (dammit).

The steering shaft coupler seemed pretty healthy to begin with almost zero play, but I rebuilt it anyway. didnt make much of a difference.

So, i'm going to bite the bullet and try a new steering box. Any vendor recommendations? quality is most important. Not trying to save a buck here. I don't want a piece of &%&*^% box slamming me into an unexpected left turn.

No, the frame is not cracked & bolts are tight.

Thanks!

Are the adapter plate bolts tight to the frame, and box bolts tight to the adapter?

There are 2 adjustments you can make to the steering box. One is bearing pre-load (which is the 1st one to do), then thebacklash adjustment.

Is the pitman bearing in the box tight, or sloppy?

Pitman arm tight on the shaft?

Tie rods all good?

Drag link could have worn joints too. Mine weren't horrible, but was enough to give me death wobble a few times. Replaced it, and problem went away. also replaced the upper king pin bushings and springs. All tight now. :D

On the W250, turn the steering shaft by hand, and see if you have any frame flex at the steering box. My 92 has it pretty bad. Didn't see any frame cracks either. Can buy/make a frame brace.

One other thing to check, if you haven't. Grab the steering shaft up under the master cylinder and give it a shake. Bushing in column could be shot as well.

Do you still have a stock steering shaft? When you said coupler are you referring to the rag joint or gear coupling at the box? I had alot of play in both, worn draglink and shattered king pin bushing.
I haven't dealt with this company, yet..... but if I was needing to replace mine I'd consider this. Has hydro ports in case you want to get wild in the future.
