A little brake dilema

Postby cmann250 » Sun Oct 02, 2011 2:30 pm

Last night i replaced rotors, calipers, and brake pads and i noticed that the passenger side caliper had been hung up for a long period of time, which was why i did the project in the first place. I got everything put back together and noticed that the caliper was still dragging, but not nearly as bad.

So what's making it do that? I assume it's not the caliper because it's brand new (reconditioned really). Proportioning valve? My E-Brake light is lit, but the E-Brake isn't on. Unplugging the wire at the proportioning valve makes the light go out, but the light comes back on when the wire is reconnected.

Other than that one little issue, it's good to go. Such is auto mechanics, eh?

Have you replaced the soft lines to the calipers at any point in time?

No, but they are a suspect. I looked at them and they didn't SEEM bad on the outside, but it's a crap shoot

Replace the lines. I've had them that looked fine and were busted on the inside

If you'd like the check for a bad line you pump your brake peddle and then crack the bleeder on the caliper. If it squirts fluid then there's the problem.

Alright thanks
Is one of those lines leaking causing the proportioning valve to get out of whack and therefore lighting the E-Brake light?

Ellis93- So that would tell me which one(s) is bad so i don't have to replace all four?

Don't be cheap, do them all and be done with it.

Yes it would, so you could diagnose the problem and not waste money throwing parts at it.
And yes if there is a fluid leak at the rear of the system then the proportioning valve would cut fluid off to the rear. A floating valve inside of it has a land in it so that the sensor, that has a pin on the end of it, falls into to turn the light on.
