But if you do it for 400 that means your working for pennys. The average labor rate around here is about 100 for regular automotive shops (Firestone Monroe etc) cummins was either 125 or 150 last time I was there. Not sure about tranny shops.
I make a good living at 70$ a shop hour, people bitch about paying that here. As Andy said its not a bad job and I can have it totally done in an 1hr and 1/2. Working on this stuff is a breeze when its over your head on a lift. You can get to everything, and there is absolutely no reason for someone to pricea job that high unless they just don't want it. I wish a 100 times a day I could work on these old trucks and make my living from them.
For future reference chain stores charge some crazy @$$ prices and their work is usually sub pare. I used to work at a NTB while going to school at UTI in Huston. I know what kind of turd people work there, not all of them are that way but most I've seen were. I'd get an alignment to do that was just (supposedly) done at some other store and Id find it was all jacked up with a "good" toe reading. Basically they set the toe and let her go and screw the rest, half a$$ it to make a dollar fast. This was also when they charged 60$ for it. That's a total ru-ru for the customers booty.
To cut this off some, if you want a tire go to Firestone or Sears,if you want it worked on fine you a "shop" to take it to before your wallet is sucked from your pocket and inverted
