AC leak from receiver dryer

Postby Diesel » Wed Jun 22, 2011 1:24 pm

Folks the fitting that bolts onto the side closest to the front of the truck on my receiver dryer will not hold pressure. The dryer is new and from advance auto. I have replaced the gasket 3 times and it still will not hold pressure. Its a stupid design from the factory with the single nut that holds the hose on from opposite the pressure connection. Could it be my hose or should I get a higher quality dryer that may have a better fit? The nipple on the hose is smaller than the hole it goes into on the dryer...is that standard or the problem?

Is the nipple alot smaller? Might need an o-ring, but it's been forever since I had one of those apart. Or a truck with working ac forthat matter.

Its just the gasket that seals. If there is another place to buy a dryer from then try that but first take a straight edge and look and see if the flang on the line is warped. If it is then its going to take a new line or you might take a rollock disc(looks like a round brown scotch brite pad with a black plastic nipple on the back) and try to resurface it some.

Ok good tips. I will try resurfacing the flange. Question: if I get a new line do I have to go to the dealer again and also how does it come apart from the condenser? It looks like the line is mated to the condenser pretty firmly.

Its the same thing on the condenser. Flang and gasket with one bolt.
As far as buying lines, IDK. Might try finding a knowlegable parts man to look for you but that might be as hard to do

I see so flange and gasket on the condenser...what about the other line from the condenser that goes to the compressor. Thats just a push-on line? Mine is just pushed on there is no large mechanical clip or anything...is that correct for the other line?

Stock condensor has flat block both hoses go into and single bolt holds it onto the condensor. One line comes off that and has a fitting that screws onto the compressor. Other line screws onto compressor and goes back up to the flange leading to the evaporator core area. If I can get my email working I'll upload pics later.

Thanks! Now you are talking about intercooled right? On mine there is the bolt on line but there is a second line that goes from compressor to condenser that screws onto the compressor and then it seems like it pushes onto the condenser and I can spin it.

Update: system was quickly vacuumed to 30 last night. This afternoon it was at 29. Does temperature effect vacuum or do I still have a slow leak?

Ambient temp effects every aspect of an ac system.
I've seen a lot of a/c systems leak a little vacuum off. I believe it to be the shaft seal in the compressers. They're metal clad lip seals and have a tendency to open a little and let air by when ever there is vacuum. As soon as pressure is in the system it should push against the seal and seal off. This is only what I've seen through the years and is in no way scientific fact, a little disclaimer

Haha nice! Well I pulled a vacuum for about 4-5 hours today so that hopefully I won't have to trash my brand new dryer because it saw a bit of air. Hopefully tomorrow even if its not at 30in/lbs its not much lower than 28-29in/lbs.

Ran a vacuum for a little last night and then left the truck. This morning it was at 29in/lbs. So I should be ok to have a professional run a charge?
