driver side hub lock assembly moves

Postby 1992gen1_fan » Wed Aug 14, 2013 5:03 pm

Hello. Been trying to track down a click noise in the front end and recently noticed that the driver side WARN hub lock assembly moves by hand. I can move it back and forth about 1/16" +/-. Its the whole chrome cover that moves. Is that normal? Whats the fix?

I'm still not sure if its related to the "click" noise. Other than that it works fine but seems like water and dust would get in there and mess things up.

You shouldn't be able to move it, I would suggest taking it apart and see what's going on inside. Since its a Warn, go ahead and get the service kit for it, comes with new screws, o rings, snap rings, etc.

Ok, I just took a better look at the other side and it also moves a bit. The assembly's were replaces a few years ago.

I removed the cap and knob and the piece that the cap's screws thread into is what is causing the movement.

I'm pretty sure that piece is just held in with the snap ring, it's not bolted tight, so it will move a little bit. I remember trucks from the '70's being like that, a little loose.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Yea it has a coiled snap ring that holds internals in there. Good to hear that it might be normal. Maybe I just never noticed it before.
