Name this front end, and rear axle.

I just bought a 93 D-350, the PO swapped a rear axle into it from a 1-ton workvan. I need to know what it is so I can either swap a new one in or get a different gear set. I'm thinking it has gears in 4.56 range right now, it doesn't want to go much above 60, and at that speed it is screaming. Here are some pics of rear axle.

The front end was in it when when the PO bought it but I don't think it's stock. I need to figure out what it is so I can fix the steering. It has about 4 inches of slop in the steering wheel and wanders all over the road. Here are the pictures of it.

Looks like a Dana 70 from here. If it has 4.56s, you wont go much over 60, even in OD. Mark Nixon- what's your top speed?

On that note, if the injection system isnt up to snuff, it can SOUND like it's screaming, and only be turning 2500rpm or so.

Thanks for the reply, it's a D70 out of a 1978 Dodge motorhome. It will do 75 @ 3k rpms, 55 is about 2200 rpms. Not much fun for the highway, but it still got 16.3 mpg.

The hauler would run 75-80 in overdrive with a 4500 (Tranny's smoked right now, not weight related), but I did run the high speed screw all the way out and readjust the linkage to get it to do it.
It will top out at 55 in 4th.
As I said, I do have overdrive and it makes it more tolerable.

I also got similar mileage.
The thing is, it seems the deeper the gear, the more consistant the mileage is, loaded vs. unloaded.

With an "average" 2wd diesel standard cab on my bed, no wind, no great hills, it would still pull down 10-12, with a big windbreak above the cab.
I'm talking a truck, with load, that weighs in at around 14,000 pounds.
An E/C dually 4x4 is @ 2,000 pounds more.

Lotta' weight on what amounts to a 1 ton SINGLE unit!

Mark.
