Little gauge project

Postby Gots_a_sol » Mon Jun 14, 2010 6:09 pm

Pulled the cluster apart and cleaned out the 17 years of dust. While I had it apart, I wanted to do something to make it not look so dated.

So its from this

to this

Its a fluorescent paint also, so it really pops out at you

I really wanted it to light up through the numbers, but there was no way to do that without making entirely new gauge faces since they are metal :(

I just used some water-based r/c car paint I had laying around. I used a tooth pic with the end rounded off to fill in the white areas and the pointed end to touch up places I got paint I wasn't supposed to. The paint is really thin so I had to put a couple layers on.

Camera phone is making it look pinkish. Its more of a red-orange. I'll find my actual camera and get better pics eventually.

Well I am sitting here with a broken leg, so I have tons of free time on my hands for little projects like this.

Found a black light to play with. Holy crap. I might have to see about using one of those instead of the factory setup to illuminate this thing

Next you be covering the inside with old blacklight posters and smoking dope in there. Not that there's anything wrong with that,

Still haven't worked out a way to get a black light to shine onto these things without seeing the source itself. oh well. My red led's came in so I put the cluster back together and put it back in the truck

It is very much red and not pink, my camera phone seems to not like the red or orange and shows it pink-ish. Also, its not quite as bright in person as it seems in the pics.

I even replaced the stock dash light with a small board with a couple led's on it. It didn't do much from the factory anyway, but now its at least easier on the eyes at night. lol.

Next victims are the dome light (which I need to find a new lens for or a completely new light assembly) and the green/blue ring around the key cylinder.
