There are snap rings and bearings and the like holding everything together...

I am building a NV4500 right now, and I haven't found a good tear down/ rebuild thread, but there is a good assembly thread over on CF...

Take your time, there are a few little springs that will go flying if you aren't careful...

Hey thanks it was only the first synchros right by the input shaft that gave me a fit. I got it all apart and new synchros put on. Git the case sprayed and will install cluster, main, 5th and input shaft tomorrow... Some pics of the progress

I never had any problems with the springs had to have the wife hold one wile I put the thing back together but all and all I think it was not that bad. Some of the bearings were on there pretty tight. Can't wait to get this thing in my truck!!

You're really moving along, looking good!

I had the same deal with the bearings, got my bearing puller/splitter in today, should be able to finish mine tomorrow.

Got it done!!! That fifth gear thing is a pain I had to end up using a punch and a big hammer to get it tight... Probably not right at 280flbs. But it's really tight. Plus the two set screws I think I'm good. Ohh and thread lock. Still need the coupler for the transfer case...
Had to order a fork for the throw out bearing totally overlooked it. Also bolts for flywheel and pressure plate.
almost ready to pull that crap auto tranny out for the second time. Any one looking for an A518 near pueblo CO. I Have one real cheep...

2 set screws?
The ones that periodically will back off and drop into the gears? THOSE 2 set screws?
I STRONGLY RECOMMEND you at least peen the holes where they reside partially shut with a punch.

Mark.

Sounds like a good idea never thought about that. Standard transmission and gear said it was the updated nut so I never thought to ask about failures...

stoner--not here to rattle your cage, but i'm going to bring this up just because you haven't mentioned it--you need the second gen engine adapter plate and starter to run the nv4500. i learned this the hard way when i started out (and never finished) mine. your picture inspired me to paint my trans, as i hope to tear into it soon (once again). hang in there.

Advanced adapters also makes a conversion kit to use the 1st gen stuff.

But IMO the correct way is to use the 2nd gen adapter plate and starter

So I could be wrong but the guys at advanced adapters said that the adapter plate for the getrag360 and the a518 are the same all I would need is the bell housing from them that uses all the existing getrag parts clutch fork, hydrolics, and starter would all be from the existing truck but since I am doing an auto swap I would get parts all for the getrag not the nv4500... They seamed very confident that many people have done it this way. However they did say that they got all there clutch forks from the dealer. Dealer no longer caries this part.

The adapter plates are identicle between the autos and manuals.

If you have the advanced adapters kit all you need is the getrag stuff.
