Transfer case leak

Postby 1$Chuck » Tue Apr 30, 2013 10:06 am

I've got a 1990 with the 5 sp and 4wd. My transfer case is leaking from the seal were the rear drivesshaft connects. What all is involved in replacing the seal?

Thanks!

It's pretty easy. Remove the driveshaft, the nut that holds the yoke, then the yoke and you can remove the seal two ways. 1. Dig a seal puller in behind it and pry it out...or 2. Remove the seal housing (aluminum) and drive the seal out from behind. I usually do it this way, it's just easier for me. Install new seal, some RTV for the aluminum seal housing, tighten the bolts, install the yoke, put some sealant around the shaft where the yoke nut sits, install the nut and tighten it down. Hook up the driveshafts, check the transfer case lube level, fill if necessary and away ya go!

Hope this helps you!

like ^he^ said, mine has a rubber gasket type thing that sandwiches between the output shaft, and the yoke to seal off the splines. i've seen them leak here before and the more times you pull the yoke the more chewed up the rubber gets so silicone helps. also some places offer either a double lip seal, or quad4x4 said some have enough seal surface to install 2 single lip seals.
