Dana rear ID

Postby 93cummins89 » Sat Jun 13, 2015 8:13 am

Ok I just found the stamp on my rear end that says
Dana
43786
312 2
Date of manf.
What gear would this be? I'm thinking a 312 but I'm not sure

Tell use the year model of truck and the trans it has. Most of us do not know the dana numbers for each gear offered.

The only gears offered in the diesel trucks were 3:07/3:54/4:10

With a getrag you had options for all three ratio's offered. That was 3:07's, 3;54's, 4:10's.

On the right side axle tube about 6" away from the center section. On the top of the tube is some numbers. Copy them down and go to this link.

That will give you the build sheet for that axle. Now if the gearing hasn't been changed your good.

Not sure if Dana skipped stamping numbers on many diffs, or they rust away... but I've only managed to find a couple of axle tube stampings amongst dozens of diffs. I suppose the nifty steel tag with the ratio stamp is no longer attached to a diff cover bolt?

A Dana 70 with 3.54 gears the most common configuration for your truck.

Dana stamped every axle housing. Rust most likely took the numbers out. Now if you find an axle the numbers do not cross get ready for some fun. Some where inside that axle Dana did some jury rigging. The ones I found was the OD of a bearing race was wrong. The bearing race OD had been cut wrong, as in to small. What Dana did was to grind the race OD smaller to fit the incorrect race diameter.

I have found two Dana 61's and one 71 with that issue. I haven't found that issue on 60's or 70's.

The vast majority of the (Dodge) Dana 61 and 71 are to accommodate the 3.07 ratios used with the 727 (non OD) 3spd auto in cummins trucks. I've heard of exceptions, but that's getting into double-rainbow with a unicorn kind of stuff.
