Gear Vendors, Baby!

Postby Ace » Wed Aug 06, 2008 6:20 am

I've had a Gear Vendors splitter behind my Getrag for over a year and half now. Best upgrade for the Dodge Cummins driveline I can think of. It gives alot of flexibility to many aspects of how the power gets to the ground. You can literally always be in the right gear for towing or any driving situation regardless of gearing and tire size. I'm running 4.10s so my gears are deep enough to tow heavy and go 4th over for highway speed direct through the Getrag. OTOH, with 34" tires I run about 1600 rpm unloaded in 5th over at 70mph. So you get great fuel mileage AND awesome heavy towing capability. I cannot think of any other way to get both.

Ace do you remember what your mileage was before the gear vendors and what it is now?

It was doing 19.5mpg highway, the day I drove it home after buying it (long trip, kept track of mileage). Then I hand calc'd it a couple times after installing the GV and it was averaging 20. I even allowed a 6% correction factor for the speedo error. But remember that's "average." That included about 20-30% city plus alot of heavy right foot time doing mods, testing, etc.

I have not been on a long enough trip to get a good solid highway number. But I would not have been surprised to see 22-23 straight highway at 65-70. I recently just got the correct tires for the speedo gear in the GV and I am hoping it's at 23-4mpg now. Next long trip, we'll see. ;-)

I've heard mixed reviews on this. I know a guy in StLouis who got a GV and didnt gain anything but lower RPM and less noise at highway speeds- no gain in MPG. Other guys have gained 2-3mpg with it. I think the guys with 4.10s have more to gain than those with 3.54s.

There's probably some truth to that. It all boils down to gearing and how you use the truck. The main reason I wanted it was to be able to drive the 4.10s on the highway unloaded. Gearing flexibility from towing to daily driving is the main reason to use it - not as a mileage enhancer. Just get 3.54s and slightly taller tires if that's all you're looking for.

Towing is where it really shines. It shifts ALOT quicker than the Getrag. There's nothing like having that extra 400 rpm available at the flick of a switch on those increasing grades that just kill you with a downshift.

In essance what a splitter does is double your transmission gears. You will have a gear directly between your normal gears plus an OD. This means you would have about half of an RPM difference when up-shifting or down-shifting.
For example, instead of an 800 RPM difference from 2nd to 3rd, you will have a 400 RPM difference from 2nd to 2nd-over and another 400 RPM's from 2nd-over to 3rd.
This allows you to keep the engine in it's power-band or torque-curve almost constantly. Hope this helps explains it somewhat.
On automatics with the Gear Vendor units they only split gears when under a load unless done so manually. All no or light load conditions will shift normally through the gears and drop into OD at higer speeds.

As an added note... you can also split the other way. I have a underdrive "splitter" on my Motorhome....with 3.54 tail gears and a 460 with moderately tall tires for a Class C I can cruise at 75 mph and get 12mpg while still possessing the ability to run up Eisenhower pass in Colorado at speed limit in Drive when split. I just wish it had a Cummins in it
