hard shifting

Postby randyswelding » Wed Oct 15, 2008 4:41 pm

i got around 25k on my rebuild from bluementhals and my southbend clutch and the dang thing still whines in 4th and hard to get in reverse and its quit notchy going in and out of gears.when i drive its some times nicly expecially when cold, but then other times its hammer down and goin threw the gears :D (not grinding when goin in but hard).so what does that sound like i need to do,just keep drivin it and change my driving style or let the boost come on and off then shift?or do i need to pull my head out and smell the fuel(instead of coffee in the mornin) and relearn how to drive it

That could be several things.. Can you adjust the clutch or is it a fixed hydraulic? You could have a bad pressure plate or friction disc. Its not your tranny its your clutch causing this problem.

You might want to check your clutch pedal too, my truck did the same thing then I found the bushing that holds the rod to the pedal for my clutch's master cylinder was missing! So a new bushing and a few zippy ties for good measure and it was golden.

it really just sounds like your clutch isnt disengaging all the way with the pedal down. Check the pedal free play before it starts to pull off the clutch. I dont know what the spec is for getrags and 1st gens but make sure it just doesnt seem excessive. Thats what it sounds like to me at least.

It use to be 1" of free play was good but with a hydraulic clutch I dont know if you can adjust it as I do not have a 1ST Gen stick and have not been under one.

1 1/2 is way to much. i would make it so its between 3/4 and 1 inch and call it good but i know 1 1/2 is to much.

Randy:
My truck started shifting poorly, was hard to shift, would grind going in and was hard to get out of gear. It was the Hyd Master Cyl. that was bad. Replaced it and no problems since.

TWorline i didnt think of that (duh) it could be just a bent push rod or something not allowing it disengage all the way or something. or even just maybe a little low on fluid. check the fluid level and take a good look at everything to see if you can tell if anything isnt right.
