Whatever you do, don't use gear oil.

The best thing for it is a synchromesh MTF. These fluids came out later, and will provide much better performance and protection. I use Royal Purple Synchromax in mine. There's any number of them available out there now.

It's easier to use a PTO bolt hole to overfill.

You'll find the most recommended and used lube is Mobil One 5w30 synthetic engine oil.

I run regular 15-40 in mine, but I don't run it in the winter either.
On the overfill, I put a street ell in the check hole, then a nipple and a cap to raise the fill point. I can just pour the oil in now.
I also welded a piece of rod in the cap, for a dipstick.

I used to run Mobil 1 5w or 10w 30 but after going to Redline MTL, I won't be going back to Mobil.
My other recomendation is same as Ace's; Syncromax.

I now always fill it through the top PTO hole. Adds at least 1 and possibly 2 more quarts.

I run the same 15-40 in my engine, tranny, and tcase, makes oil changes easier!

I fill mine with a pump through the top bolt of the PTO cover. Removing the shifter is a major PITA for me. Most people don't have as much trouble with it from what i gather, but in the 3 times I have done it it took me forever. I try to avoid that at all costs.
