727/47rh swap stuff

Postby MMiller » Sat Jan 03, 2009 7:04 pm

Today I reminded myself how much I love working on old, dirty, beaten trucks. I started pulling the 727 out of my 90 with the plan of swapping in a purple 47rh, out of my brothers 96. Anyway, I'd rather pull a getrag any day over pulling an auto out of a first gen cummins. That thing kicked my butt all the way.

Question for today is this: What will happen when I remove the heat exchanger under the turbo? This truck will be primarily driven in the summer, usually at slow speeds. It is my offroad truck, that will spend hours idling along the trail, then hammered on. I am planning on keeping it street legal, and able to be driven year around. I've heard that this exchanger is supposed to 'warm up the trans', but wonder about all the gassers that do not have this. My truck does have a cooler up in front of the radiator, and if necessary will get another cooler under the truck with a fan. I've heard of twin turbo guys removing this exchanger to get more room for turbos.

What say the auto trans guys?

If it was a summer only truck I would say leave it off and use a good add on cooler with the fan like you stated. With it being year round capable. I would leave it one. I would still add the aftermarket cooler to.

I ran twin coolers on my truck, it never got hot. I still had the heat exchanger on there also. There is a pic of how mine were set up.

Great, this makes it more fun, now that you say that, Philip may have told me that in a phone conversation a long time ago. What does the RE need to know to function. I figured on wiring in an OD switch, and a convertor lock up "mystery switch". The OD trans was basically free, and complete and in working order. My brother missed his 5 spd. I'm going to swap mounting plates with a buddy that wants to put a 727 behind a 12 valve. I'm basically commited to running the trans I have in the shop.

look at the connector where the harness plugs into the tranny just behind where the shift lever comes through the case, 3 pin is rh, 12 pin is re. If you have the re you need a computer to control the tranny, there is no governor in the re trannies and no provision to put one there.

There is a connector that is horizontal with 3 pins, just like my 727, right behind the shift lever. I think this is probably the neutral saftey switch. There is also a connector that is verticle with 8 pins in it rearward of the shift lever, and right in front of the rear cooler port.

That sounds like the RE to me as I have a 47rh and there is no 8 pin connectors on it. The 47RE will be way more of a pain to install. As mentioned you will need a trans controller for it to function properly. On the rh you just give the two outside pins ground and the center one 12v. That controls lock up and od but its not so simple on the re. Start looking for an aftermarket controller. Call ATS and see what they say.

See, that's what happens when you get past double nickle age, brain turns to mush and you can't remember chit. I'm lucky I haven't left my butt somewhere, let alone how many connector pins are in a 47-48 re.
