Where to get A518 rebuild kit (no reverse)

Postby Cowboy_Customs » Sun Jan 11, 2009 9:31 am

looking into picking up a 93 with no reverse. Guess I'll start with a couple questions, why would it lose reverse of all things? Could this be an easy fix?

So where is the best place to get the best tranny rebuild kit? Who does Suncoast, Goerend, DTT, ATS....... whos rebuild kit do they use?? Im not looking for a super delux automatic transmission, at least not right now, I want to convert to manual eventually so I dont want to dump a grand in the tranny for hard parts, but still need a good tranny.

What other internals would you recommend? Thinking hard about a valvebody, and a hughes converter. But what about them other hardparts Suncoast offers?

Someone most likely got it stuck and was rocking it from forward to reverse. This usually snaps the mounting lugs off the 1st/reverse band.

I have seen it many times.

Or you could be trying to unstick a clutch on a farm tractor. Got the clutch free but blew reverse at the same time.

If you don't want to spend a ton of money on it then don't... Get the Master kit from here, http://www.bulkpart.com/Merchant2/merch ... ct_Count=0. Get a couple new bands and an upgraded band strut. Then spend the rest of your wad on a really good torque converter...

If you plan on converting it to a manual anyways, why don't you just wait, save some more money, and buy a 5spd truck? I bet it would be less expensive than having to rebuild the 518, then convert it to manual.

We will go with just that fact! Hows a 93 W350 clubcab Virgin original owner LE with 180K with minimal rust for around 2000 bucks sound??

Im totally for waiting for the "right one" to come along but im impatiant. (guess that explains my choice in women huh?)

I just want to get it and get it operational to the point I can tow 12K pounds and not worry about the tranny for the next....... 8 months?

So what are the recommendations for upgraded internals? Brain said NO 5:1 strut thing, and I have seen 4:1 and 4.2:1 and stock.

Here is what I know, I want to do a COMPLETE overhaul in my garage, NO wear parts unchanged! Transgo shift kit, possibly a VB if I find one cheap enough, and some minor internal hard parts that are upgradeable, with a DECENT TC. Im not dumping the coin on a 650 dollar suncoast TC like I would want if i were keeping the auto. So a Hughes will work till I find the conversion, unless I find one in the next week, in my price range.

It better be a Dually!

2K is a pretty good deal. Hell go for it. If you think you are capable of the swap, then buy this truck. You don't want to regret it later. 8)

ohhh its a dually alright! I was thinkin the other night, n remembered I cant switch it over to a 5 speed. Part of my standards for a 1ton is it has to be an automatic for livestock hauling reasons! I could shift it easy enough so as not to jar the animals, but by the time you go and do all that the pyro will get buried just trying to regain the momentum! ahwell, so I guess a real built a518 is in order.

Why not go for the 47rh? A built 518 will do anything you want it to, but lock up is very nice. 8)

I was thinking that route. I havent researched putting the RH in a first gen yet, discussed trying to make the a518 lockup tho.

I have seen a site that supposedly sells the parts to make the 518 lock up. Seemed odd to me.

As far as the 47rh swap, there is a lot of info on it, and if you plan on towing a lot with the truck, I'm sure it would hold up better than the 518. They do cost a bit more to build up though.

We are going to need pictures of the new truck as soon as possible. :D
