Worn out door hinges

Postby J-link » Sun Mar 30, 2014 6:53 pm

Does any one know if the door hinges off a second Gen truck or maybe a Dakota of our year will work?

Apparently the pins and bushings I bought were cheap and they wore out and now the hole in my hinge is about twice the size its supposed to be and I can't get the bushings to stay in now :x

Is there somewhere to buy new ones?

I'm talking about the ones that mount to the cab

what I done on mine was I took an old hack saw blade cleaned the paint off one end and ground it down to a point. Took a 12volt battery charger and put burrs in the hole drove the bushing in and its been holding up. Mine wasn't that big though. I haven't looked for new hinges and I think the Dakota ones are different from what I remember. I believe they are smaller.

Your either buying used or repairing your old ones. I've looked high and low and all I've found was a few writups on how to make some.
What I normally do (mostly on s10s and once on my dodge) is to weld up the worn area of the holes and use a carbide bur bit/angle motor to rough it back to an appropriate hole size. Then finish up with a round file (chain saw file). It'll take awhile but the results are worth it. The bushing tend to stay in place for a few years after that.

In a pinch, I've threaded that oversized hole with a 1/4" pipe-tap. Then screwed in a 1/4" brass nipple. then cut off the excess length, then drilled it to fit the hinge pin.

Works well thus far.

Ok thanks, I guess I'll fix it when the door comes off for the new one to go on

The brass nipple idea sounds pretty good, I may have to use that, how long has it been in?

^ He said "nipple".

It's not been in too long. Six months perhaps? I'm not sure how long it will last, but it did save me at the time.

next step was to tack weld, then remove pin and hinge, final weld, assemble, paint

Draginmopars that looks pretty beefie,I may steal that idea myself 8)
FWIW I have had problems solely with the bottom hing on either side of the truck,I think what you have there might just be the money shot
