Door swap questions

Postby 888 » Sun Dec 20, 2015 7:28 am

So, I'm going to be doing a "door rodeo" shortly and I was wondering if you guys had done some of this before I just tear into everything.

I have a 91 D-150 donor truck with good doors and crank windows, those doors are going on my son's 89 D-250 with power windows. The 89's doors are rust free but have some damage.

I need the power window stuff off of those 89 doors for my 92 D-350 that has non working power windows. I want to save all of the cables and motors and switches etc when I take the doors off of the 89 in case the 92 needs any of it. The 92 is still in Knoxville for another week so I don't know why the windows don't work, just that they don't. With both windows not working, it seems more likely that it's a fuse or electrical problems but I want to be prepared with whatever it needs and I'll stash the power window stuff if I don't need it now.

Looking at the manual, it appears that the harness for the power windows terminates somewhere behind the dash, maybe by the HVAC and radio unit. Assuming I can find these plugs, can I get the harness out of the body to remove the doors without taking the dash out?

I see a reference to a "splice" somewhere in the harness right at the door but I'd rather just take the whole harness out.

Anybody done this before and have an idea on whether it's possible to get those harnesses out without pulling the dash?

TIA

Joe

It's been a while but I don't remember there being a plug on the driver's side. If there is its up at the top of the dash bolted to the firewall. You can unhook all the electric in the door and fish it through the door though to remove it without cutting anything.

Ya know, I thought about that but it I would have that harness hanging out in the hinge area that isn't used for the crank window door. There doesn't appear to be enough room behind the kick panel with the vent to put it anywhere back there, so I wanted to get it out of the truck for reuse on the 92 if needed and just to get it out of the way.

My gut feel is that the dash is going to have to come out but I was hoping not. I still need to move the truck around and I don't know how much I can take out of that area and still have the truck start and run. Long term, the column and everything is coming out of it, will just be a frame and a bare cab when it heads to the yard.

The power windows and locks have there own wiring harness that runs across the firewall and plugs into the main harness. You have to pull the dash to get it out though.

Thanks for the replies. I found the passenger side plugs behind the glove box door so that door is ready to come off. The drivers side plugs must be way up on the cowl somewhere, I lost the harness when it went straight up after after it entered the body behind the dash. I guess the dash will need to come out, at the very least the gauges etc will need to come out so I can see back there. Sure would be nice if they had plugs on the drivers side like they do on the passenger side.

I don't think there is one on the driver side. I remember saying this was a dumbass setup when I did my cab swap. I think it's a main plug from the main harness then its all one over to the passenger side and into the driver's door its been a few years since I did mine.

I believe that there is one, inside the door itself...

I know my door didn't have one inside.

Well, I was mistaken. I double checked my FSM and there isn't a mention of a connector in that location...my bad

No plug on the driver side door. Just changing a door you can remove the switch plugs and they will come out the door cutout.

Back to this one for a moment.....are the door shells the same between power and manual window trucks? I saw a hole for the window crank behind the power window door panel. My power windows don't work and I'd rather have crank windows anyway, after wrestling with window motors etc in the past. I believe the junkyard uptown has rusty crank window doors for me to get the guts out of the door for transplanting into my power window doors. I assume it's possible to get the crank window/power window guts out of the doors?

TIA
