78 Power wagon doors and hood on a d250

Postby Agentorange » Tue Jan 19, 2016 3:12 pm

Old dodge truck parts are really scarce out here in southern California so it's tough finding a set of doors for my 250. I managed to find a really straight and dent free set of 78 power wagon doors, well shells more likely but they are in really good condition. I looked at the door mounts and they seem to be the same but I'm not sure if the cabs were the same. Exact same with the hood. Mine had a hole for a hood stack plus I like the power wagon style. I wish I could just get the whole cab because it's super straight but the inside is trashed.

90% sure cabs are the same. If you change the hood you have to change the fenders IIRC because the body line at the front of the hood and fenders changed someplace along the line, 80's I think.
Hopefully somebody will correct me if I'm wrong.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Yup doors fit perfectly. They actually look the same on the outside. Heck I can even use my 1st gen panels and glass on the power wagon door. No hole for the speaker. No problem there

To mount the hood the hood latch may need some mild mods and the cowl is different from 72-80 vs 81-93, so likely will need matching 78 cowl grille with 78 hood

Got it mostly sorted. The trim on the doors are too high. Might move the trim down or remove it all together. Hood latch I just moved to the right an inch or so. It closes all the way but doesn't stay locked for some reason. I'll just get hood pins for extra safety. New fenders are on too

This was it before

Looks great, I'd love to find a nice old school hood and matching fenders for my '92 but that's easier to say than do here in the salt belt. I read somewhere that the old bumper will mount to the newer brackets and I hate the looks of the front step bumper so it will be going away for sure

The main difference in the pre-80 sheet metal is the body line down the side of the of the sheet metal. Other then that they are a pretty straight forward swap.

I ran a birdbath hood and cowl cover on my crewcab for a couple years. You don't need to change the fenders, the hood lines up fine. But as mentioned the hood latch requires some movement, and I had to run a shorter hood latch spring so it would actually close.....coil bind with the OEM 1st Gen unit. Also required a slight ding on the underside of the hood to clear the latch mechanism.

Any better pictures of the doors on it?

That's good stuff to know, thank you for the info I will be looking a little harder for the early hood now that I know it's a fairly straightforward swap.
