When did the grille and trim change?

Postby HILLBILLY » Fri Feb 19, 2016 6:34 am

Does anybody know when exactly they changed the old grille 89/90 to the modern grille, and did they also change the chrome trim to plastic the same time, or was there also a old grille/plastic trim model. Late 90 early 91?

I'm wondering, as this was offered to me as a 89. Also the steering wheel is different than on my 89. Thanks

It was mid year,(91.5) that saw the introduction of the intercooled motor, and the big chrome grille and the plastic wheel and side trim along with it. So 91 was a transition year for these trucks. I have seen some odd trim and options in this transition year. I grabbed some parts from a 91/91.5 truck some years ago, and it had a non-IC motor, wiring harness, and steering column, but had the IC rad and rad support, big chrome grill, and trim along with it. And it appeared to be all original?

To be able to run the older grille, without modification, that truck would not be intercooled....so it's possible that the trim may have been added, or the rad support and motor were changed? But as I mentioned above...there did seem to be some odd ducks produced. ;)

Check the door jam sticker...should tell you when it was produced.

The truck I got the RC's front clip from was a 91, non-IC with the IC'd core support, radiator, and grill. It also had a 727/3.07 rear.

Thank you guys!

Yes I will ask the guy if he can picture me the door sticker and vin of course. The car is located very far from me. In Croatia. And I want to make sure it is mostly original and not messed up before I take up some travelling.

Early 91's to when 91.5's came out was a mess. The early 91 core support is an animal by itself. It has the proper mounting for the newer grille, but no openings for an intercooler or correct mounting for the cross flow radiator.

Here are some pics to show what I am talking about..

In the last pic it shows the radiator mounting, and the modifications I made to run a second gen intercooler.
