Sound proofing

Postby 79Powerwagon » Wed Mar 16, 2016 1:04 pm

Have a 93 12v in my 79 short box reg cab powerwagon.

I put down some butyl rubber on the floor when I redid the rockers and floor pans, and covered it with bedliner. Whether or not it helped I don't know, didn't really drive it before I did it.

This truck is loud inside. Highway isn't too pleasant. My exhaust isn't ideal for noise reduction but Most of the noise comes right through the firewall.

Anybody found some budget ways to sound deaden the engine bay? Used matting off of other trucks?

Sound deadner mat works really well. I put bed liner on my firewall inside and out when I swapped my cab, but the padding on the floor kills more noise than the bed liner in my truck. Mat on the fire wall would have cut the noise a lot.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

I used some carpet remnants in my pile, there is no firewall insulation, but it did make a pretty big difference.

I like the cheapness of carpet. But for me in MN it would just collect too much moisture/muck. That is why I went with bedliner.

Thinking if going to the scrap yard and pulling some firewall insulation out of a newer rig.

I'm not far away, only IA. If you look at the first picture, there is some rubber grippy stuff with raised nubs on the back side. The cowl in my pile has always leaked, but that stuff keeps the carpet 1/2" above the metal, so when water gets in there, it'll dry out fast, and it does. I also use larger floor mats now, one is an old truck "anti-sail" mudflap, and it works well. I used undercoating and bedliner on it when I put that cab on, but it didn't do much to knock the sound down, keep the exhaust heat out or the cab heater heat in. Since I put that carpet in there, this past winter it would get fairly warm in there.
