Manual trans tilt steering column mash up

Postby JeffTheMarine » Tue Apr 05, 2016 3:38 pm

I've been thinking about this for a while and I haven't done any research about it. I am sure someone somewhere has done this so I figured I would ask about the info before I dive into it myself. I have taken apart several Chrysler steering columns from the late 60's-mid 70's and matched parts together to get what I need so I am sure that doing this with an 80's column can't be much different. I am looking to combine a manual transmission steering column with the automatic only option tilt steering wheel. I have been told that tilt wheels were sourced for Chrysler from GM parts/GM's supplier so the actual tilt mechanism is supposed to be the same with the Chrysler exterior of the column. I am have and will always have a manual trans but I would like to have a tilt wheel without going aftermarket. Has anyone on this forum tried something like this yet? If so advice... info....

Thanks
Jeff

I have never seen one and have always been told they didn't offer them. I would love to see some pictures of yours. Or if you're interested in selling the one you have let me know.

Thanks

His 90 may have the older column like my 89 has. Not sure, but wasn't the older ones different? I also didn't think the 89 had a tilt as an option? Could be wrong. Have forgotten about everything I did know about these piles.

I looked into this before, trying to swap columns around between truck. My understanding is before '92, auto columns were built by X mfg, and manual columns were built by Y mfg. Because of this, you couldn't take parts from an auto column and fix a manual column, vice versa.

Now in '92, they went to a standardized column, didn't matter if it was an auto, manual, tilt or not, the components were basically the same and you could swap things around.

I've got a '93 5spd with tilt, and used parts from a gasser '93 5spd non tilt to repair a non tilt auto column in my 92 plow truck

You may be further ahead to source a column from a post 92 manual truck with tilt and figure out the wiring to your truck
