Cool Weather Painting

Postby matthewh » Wed Sep 26, 2018 11:23 pm

Unfortunately summer got busy and I'm just now able to get to repainting the 93, now that it's late September, and temp have been in the low 60's during the day and 40's at night

Any of you northern dwellers had good luck painting in cooler temps? I have no access to a heated paint booth, and will either be inside my 2 car garage, or outside if the weather permits.

Basically down to bare metal, and will be epoxy priming the truck before doing some filler work, and colors. I'm pretty decent at painting, just not sure if there's anything I need to add or subtract to help the primer/paint cure properly.

Check with your paint supplier, they may have some tips or different fluids to use. I know when Enamel was the good paint there was at least 3 speeds of reducer to use depending on temperature. Not sure about now.

I live in maine- once the daytime high is under 60 I call it quits. I watch the humidity closely too- I never paint after rain. I also switch catalysts from slow to fast- Have been using the napa omni with the high end clear- mc161? I think. and mtk base. with eposy primer. any fillers needed, then another coat of epoxy- usually skip high build primer/surfacer

DO NOT add extra catalyst. the paint will be brittle. I'm now weighing paint mix ratios with a postal scale

In maine we are either dealing with to cold, or to many bugs. We use NAPA paint too. I used to mix Dupont in the 90's when I sold car parts. Miss the Centari for sure. I don't do the painting, the old man still does that for me. I never had the touch. I suspect at over 70 he won't be painting any more for me. Guess I will have to learn.

Not 100% what I'm using for paint company yet. I have access to Dupont, PPG, Sherein Williams locally, even thought about trying the Eastwood line of paints.

Been only in the 50's and rain all week. Pretty sure I'm not getting to get it painted before it gets too cold and the snow flies. I have a call out to several body shops near by, but nobodies gotten back yet with quotes. Might just have to wait till spring time. Hate to rush the paint process, as I don't want to have to go back and try and fix it later

Fixing it later may not be as bad as you think, just sand it down, remask, and shoot it again. The body work is the hard part, as long as it's sealed by paint it will be ok.

I live in northern BC Canada and painted the roof on my ramcharger last fall with some pre-mixed primer and paint from the local Canadian tire store. Did it outside in the sun one day when it was probably 10-12*C, and got down around freezing at night. Has held up fine but the paint is shiny in some areas, flat in others from the cold getting at it over night, but it's my plow truck and just needed to get some paint on it. Will sand and re-do one day when it gets it cummins conversion. ;)

In my friend's car, we used a 3 stage PPG paint and epoxy primer base. We did a lot of sanding to remove the imperfections.

Put plastic over anything of value in the garage. Pickup a 50,000 BTU propane salamander for heat. That will bring a 2 car garage up to the 60 degree temps you need.

If you were closer I would let you borrow my salamander.

That's for the offer Phillip. I have both a propane and a diesel/kero salamander, but the amount of moisture they cause is one issue. I thought about running the propane one and see if the moisture ever "burns off". Last time I used it, had to unthaw out well house. Had that little building up over 90f, but water was dripping off the ceiling, only ran it for 30 min or so.

your going to need air flow threw the garage. Just open a window a little way. Put a fan into the window. I would also get a paint booth filter 10 micron in size to filter exhaust air. That should take care of the moisture buildup.
