Project ugly duckling

Postby dazedandconfused » Sat Mar 12, 2011 4:00 pm

Well went and picked up a 83 half ton dodge today after visiting KTA and dropping off some parts to him. Its a solid little truck for the age. Its name comes from the ugly brown color of it.

It will be a drag truck/toy. I found this one after getting screwed out of the other one. Read this other thread to get caught up on how I ended up with this truck. Its pretty solid for a 28 year old truck.

If you don't mind the derail, how did you get those pictures to thumbnail like that? I quoted you, and it seems like you have both IMG and direct links of the same pics.

Any explanations, or better yet, shortcuts on how you did it?

Tacoclaw, Photobucket has a list of links when you click on the picture in your PB account to the lower right. It has a thumbnail link. Use that to "thumbnail".

Plans are to use my 93 D250 to repower it. Built auto, twins etc. Would you guys build up a 5 lug dana 60 or build a 9" to go under it. I know the 60 will hold since that's what is under the little red cummins express truck.

Wellllllllllll...............

The aftermarket support for both is BIG. I would consider a 10b also. If you can deal with 8 lugs in back, I would DEFINITELY do a 14B. More of them out there, huge market support, and cheaper to build...

You can find a Chrysler 8 3/4 from a 70s truck that will bolt right in and quite strong also.

Run a Mopar 9-1/4 with the A-7 (tapered roller) axle bearing conversion.
The 8-3/4 doesn't have enough root strength on the ring gear for the steady and high torque the diesel will abuse it with.

Another, much better, option would be a custom Dana 70, or 35 spline Dana 80, converted to semi-floating axles with billet 5 lug 35 spline axles and over-sized wheel studs.

Either of these options (D70, D80 or 9-1/4) will require new housing ends and a few $$$ outlay, but you would be better off in the long run, at least on the Dana axles, anyway.

Mark.

Mark care to elaborate on how to change the 70 over to semi floating 5 lug since I already have a 70 under the 93.
