Hmm Ive had Zf5 issues in IDI's before. I feel the NV4500 well stand up better.

The later ZF5 that came behind the PSD was smoother. I'm not a big fan of the NV4500. I've killed to many of them.

ZF5s out of power strokes shake and rattle at idle without the dual mass flywheel.

That is the above Zf5 out of a power stroke that originally had a dual mass here it is in my 86 single cab 6.9 with single mass fly wheel.

I had an 88 with a factory Zf5 single mass fly did not do that at all. Parted that truck out and swapped it into my other 86 and ran it till it ground 2nd and 3rd

Bad example of a video lol but the 88 Zf5 did not do that hole stupid vibrate with clutch out in neutral thing.

My Zf5 storys dont end there..

What kind of issues have you had with the 4500?

I picked mine up for $500 rebuilt 5th gear issue fixed.

One thing about the 4500behind a cummins in a ford I dont like is the shifter is kind of far back

The zf5 shifter is in the same position as the t19 shifter would go.

We just struggle to keep them together. They are slow, hard shifting dam transmissions. We have ate tons of them up in a one ton Chevy behind a small block. I've had great luck with the ZF5 myself.

I haven't had too much experience with NV4500's, but I like the shorter, smoother shifting compared to the Getrag...I guess its hit and miss with durability.

I've ate two behind Cummins trucks, dad ate several behind s small block Chevy and I ate another in a 3500hd Chevy behind a 454. I have just found they don't like to be worked hard, but we probably work them harder then most.

Andy most of the Chevy 4500's were not deserving of there trans noted reliability. Most were, imho, inferior units.
As far as I know a ZF5 was a ZF5 unit with exception of the outputs and associated housings

They lasted longer then the diesel versions I ate up and spit out. I'm just not a fan of them I guess. From what I've gathered the newer ZF trans had update synchros and a few little updates. That's only what I've read though and never been in one. I know I beat the ever living piss out of one and never missed a beat.

Good info it gives me something more to think about. I have changed plans on this truck so many times I just want to get it done because its super close. IF anything I will swap in an auto. I got a smoking deal on a 5R110 out of an 07 6.4 when I wanted to pull out the cummins and do a 6.4 swap for a quick minute. I am now planning on doing that to the single cab but have been looking at the destroked 5r110 adapter plate and controller to run behind this motor.

One of the big reasons the project got held up for so long is I have a friend who builds turbos and has a machine shop so I had him put a 62mm wheel in my originally 58mm super B. I coudnt decide if I wanted to do fire ring or O ring and ended up just doing new HG with ARP's.

Another turbo he built for me for my mustang

Its a K31 frame with a machined S300 ex housing .91 ar 76mm ex wheel 71mm billet compressor wheel. Basically an aurora 5000. Once I build new motor for the mustang going to an S480 on that and I want to use this on the truck with the S300 and do compound.
