91 w250 to 93 w150 swap, some info needed!!

Postby sb91ctd » Mon Jun 20, 2011 12:09 am

Hey guys, I need some advise as to which way to go with my swap here. Im about to purchace a 93 1/2 ton 4wd shortbed with a bad 318, the body is in great shape. I also have an early 91 w250 that the body is more/less shot, has a horrible front end wobble to it too. Now what im asking is with doing all of this outside with only a small garage neither truck will fit in, which would be easier, i know they'll both be a pain. Swap the cummins into the half ton with keeping the 5 bolt axles, or possibly swapping the 8 bolt axles if needed, or swap the cab onto the 3/4 frame? If i go with swappin the cummins i know ill have to deal with core support, wiring harness, fuel tank and lines, some other details and probably a crossmember. Or deal with trying to swap a cab, having no bed after all is said and done and the truck had sat in a field for about 3 years or so in a field so im sure ill find more problems with the chassis. I dont really haul much or plan on sled pulling, more/less a fun daily driver, so having a longer wheel base doesnt matter to me.
Any imput at all would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

Well I'm doing a halfton now and it's allot of work. Not sure if you will have to change the engine crossmember. Either way your looking at allot of work. I was afraid the half ton rear wouldn't hold so I swapped in my D70. I'll be converting it to 5 lug at a later date.

In a 4 wheel peel you do not want the stock 1/2 er axles. You want all of the running gear from your diesel rig no matter which way you go. I would not worry about running the gasser frame with your running gear. If you don't want to haul the world it will be ok.

Ok thanks for the info guys, dazedandconfused, how much trouble did relocating engine mounts give you? Was there any issue with clearance from side to side or top to bottom? I dont think there will be any but ive had a few guys from work say it might be. Richie, should all the placements of u bolts on the axles be in the same location or is any relocation needed as far as you know?

The only thing I had to do on mine for engine mounts was mod the driverside frame. It just had a hole and a dimple on the 1/2 ton frame and the 3/4 had a slot. I drilled the hole then cut the center area out with a wizz wheel. The rear D70 bolted right in mine. I have an ongoing thread with some pics right now as I'm still working on it.

I have never done it, but many people do. I suspect its all nuts and bolts. Mark Nixon would know more on that then me.

On the one truck I swapped axles on years ago, it was a bolt on affair. It was a 78 Ramcharger, swapped Dana 60's under it, the axles fit like they were made to be there ;)
