Project "86bt" Chevy Cummins Swap

Postby T_wilson_3 » Mon Mar 05, 2012 7:52 am

I am swapping a 91 intercooled 12 valve into my 1986 Chevy K10. I've had the Chevy since 05 and its had several different motor/trans combos. Right now it has a mild built 350 with a sm465/np205 and it gets every bit of 5 mpg... because of that reason it has spent the last 2 years of its life in the driveway mostly. I've decided to give it a new heart in hopes that it will be more efficient and reliable. I'm not going for record number horsepower or anything just looking for a cool everyday driver that gets around 20mpg hopefully and that has decent power. I'm planning on using a nv4500/np205 setup and right now that's about the only big parts I am lacking. Like I said I have the parts truck for the engine but it is a 2wd auto, I'll be parting out whats left of it that is good when I pull the motor. I have 1 ton running gear replacing the 1/2 ton junk. Just ordered new skyjacker springs, 6" up front 4" in the rear. Hopefully it will sit level if not I can add a 1" spacer to the back but the extra weight of the cummins should set the front down a little more than a sbc. I have 35" Nitto Terra Grapplers with 17" American Racing wheels. I'll get some pics of all this stuff up here probably tonight or tomorrow. I am going to be in South Carolina all next week but I'm going to hit it hard when I get back and I hope to have the swap done by May, June at the latest.

Also if anyone knows where I can snag a trans and tcase let me know. If it needs a rebuild that's okay, I can handle rebuilding it...I think

So this is only about 1/4 of the picture. I have tried resizing the image and it doesnt matter. It only has the front of my truck. The picture is the whole truck and a trailer hooked to it..

Any suggestions?

Ok so if you want to see the whole pictures right click on it and open in a new window or view image. I'm sure everyone knows that though. I'm new to the forum stuff so I'm learning.

Got a rust free body for the old Chevy.

I picked up the entire body for less than the cost of the replacment metal to fix the rust.

I might be getting a nv4500 that needs a rebuild. Would $400 be a good price? It has the bellhousing but no clutch fork or shifter.

You're gonna use the dually as the donor truck? That's too nice to part out!

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

X2. Why not find a rotted truck to part? I'd love to have a clean regular cab dually, even a two wheel peel.

Well this truck was a local find and a decent price. I was wanting to try to find a wrecked or rotted w250 5 speed and did find a couple but they were more than 10 hours away and what the people were wanting for the trucks and what gas would've cost me wouldn't have been worth it since the truck I would've drove only got about 8 mpg... I sort of do feel bad about tearing down a good truck..
