Truck has been on the road for over a week. Plenty of bugs had to be worked out between one tire that doesn't want to balance, bump steer, dropping t-case to deal with a trans issue, a bad injection pump (now a 215 pump), overcharging (disconnected wire), etc. As of this week, two new problems surfaced. One, the headgasket leaks coolant out of the block below the #2 exhaust (hisses when hot) and the tappet cover gasket already deteriorated and pisses a decent amount of oil. I picked up my sound system supplies yesterday and bumper supplies today, ordered all the gauges I needed and nearly finished the bumper. I dove in on buying final parts for this thing because I sold my daily 1990 truck last Thursday.

Knock on wood but I do not have a leak after taking my non cummins thermostat out. It only had 1 bypass hole rather than 2 and probably had a different spring pressure. Now, question is, should I loosen all bolts enough to put assembly lube on heads and get an accurate 140ft lbs on all or not tamper with good enough?

So if I'm hearing you correctly, should I retorque it and lube the heads of all the fasteners to get a consistent torque? I'm just a little afraid of getting over my head as it's a daily for the next month until it will be stored while I'm at school....

well how confident are you in your work? do you feel its worth it? if its just gonna sit then dont worry about it. but if you plan on using it for that month then yes, i'd torque the head down properly to just be safe. it wont hurt anything.

Fixed the tappet cover tonight. Required retiming the fu**ing pump and hours of wrenching but I think it will be dry now. Took the aluminum cover off that I made, cleaned the heck out of it, scuffed the sealing surface with sandpaper, cleaned block surface, used Permatex Right-Stuff hoping it isn't the WRONG STUFF and the tappet cover will hold. I also made 2 1/4" thick steel bars that go across the end bolts of the tappet cover to keep it from caving in when I torqued it-making the corners seal like they should.

I'm not going to mess with the head gasket if I'm going to drive it 5 hours away and spend the week and come back. I feel messing with it in it's current state is only asking for trouble but I will take my tools along with me in case the thing decides to spring a leak again somewhere between home and my grandparents...

Maybe you can just do a retorque on the head before you go. That may be just enough to keep it together for your trip or it may fix it. The other option is to back the timing off some keep the pressures down.
Have fun on the trip and drive safe! ;)

Here's what's been going on....

Gauges done, sound system in, floor mats in, bumper done, working out some other bugs and then washed it off and shot some pics. Leaving for college next week and will paint the hood when I'm home next along with a tailgate.... Have about 1000 miles on it and the turbo's quite incredible. Maxes at 60PSI and 1300* on the pyro. Yesterday I sheared off 12 out of 16 axle shaft bolts on the rear on my way down to the shop. Wasn't even driving it hard so I shared the 4 bolts between the 2 sides and babied it down there. Drilled them out bigger with stronger bolts....

Well, I'm in college now so I don't have free time like I used to. When I'm home I do work on it but my college is 3 hours away and the truck is being stored at home.

The other week I started wet sanding and buffing the truck and the results I got so far are awesome. I plan to paint the hood and tailgate this winter along with installing the HVAC and doing the emergency brake and mirrors.

I hope you plan on getting some mud flaps to protect that paint from the boulders those tires will pick up.
