to P or not to P....that is the question

Postby ellis93 » Mon Mar 18, 2013 9:20 am

Thinking on ditching the p pump on the motor going in my Chevy. I figure I'll receive several head scratches on that but I am thinking I'd like to keep things simple on this swap. Plus I've got use to dickin around with the little ve,why would I want to confuse my self with this other.....stuff 8) . I'm not going to try to get somekind of crazy power out of this truck, really just want a simple, fun,DD that can get decent mileage while allowing me enough room to stretch time out while im riding.

I've thought that the advance of our pumps would have to offer more economy than the fixed time situation of the ppmup. Also I've a couple sets of injectors to choose from to run with the ve,also the capability of setting the pop pressures of siad injectors. If I were to keep the p pump stuff I'll wind up needing to buy/redneck manufacture what I need to test p pump stuff, that's not raelly a big deal just time consuming.
What's yalls thoughts?

This is true, trustworthy people are much more likely to keep their VE, only wieners want to crap out and get a P-pump.

We all know Pete hasn't met a wiener he didn't trust, but can you say the same? :safe:

I'd keep the P7100.

1. You already have it.
2. it's worth more than the same VE parts
3. They're not that evil.
4. If you understand a VE, a P7100 is simpler in my mind.

Honestly, I'd probably keep it too. No way I'd go through the hassle of changing timing cases and whatnot.

I would imagine you could probably gather up the VE parts up slowly and cheaply, then pull all your stuff off and make a couple bucks on it, but I doubt you'd want to by then. I don't think there's a whole lot of difference in the two when it comes to driving habits.

Well that's just the thing,I'm positive I'd like the power and such,I just thought that the little pumps capability of advancing the timing is worth more than power to me. Schit....now with the power my ol'dodge has I'm tearing stuff up,for me that's the signal to stop while I'm ahead. If I were aiming to build a pavement eating fire breathing monster this wouldn't even be an issue, but since it'll be just a fun truck/dd do I really need it.
If I were to keep it,I'm gonna screw with it,there's not two ways about it. Hell,I've already started poking around the "other" sites looking for the best pump mods, all seem to be performance related with no/little regard for economy/durability....short of egt warning.....typical of all of us.

If you think your dodge runs strong just remember that C10 will feel stronger since it will be about 2000 pounds lighter. Me I would probably run it but I'm building my truck to be a pavement pounder.

Alright.....let me put it another way 8) Whats tbe best mileage people see out of the p pump? With what mods?
The truck will have a 3.08 l/s 12bolt under it (I already know,it's gonna break) with the lockup 47rh.

Jeff Garmon has a 3rd Gen RCSB 2wd truck with a P-pump and 47RH.

Keeping the boost below 10psi, he got nearly 55mpg on a 100 mile trip. On the dyno, made 699.9xhp.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Taco! Nobodies called me "beefy" before!

Ellis, Just push the AFC housing and the fuel plate all the way forward, and that's a noticable difference. I did that to mine, and was impressed. For a week. ;) My '97 gets about 15-16 mpg in summer, but I'm on it alot and the timing is turned up pretty good. I thought about turning it back, but I have to borrow the tools and it runs good so I deal with it.
