Its not too far off then...grabbed the flat bar out of the garage, works well wedged under the throttle pedal, kick it up to 1100-1200 rpms for warm ups and what not...

Valve stem seals......? I wouldn't have thought mine were bad till I pulled the head. There was oil in the exhaust port of number 5.

Ike, do you have a different turbo to throw on and try? That would tell you right away if it's the turbo or not.

How would that run upstream into the manifold? Surely the scavenging effect wouldn't pull fluids into there

Or run the engine with no turbo bolted to the manifold ;). Maybe you just need to get out and work the engine real hard to clean up/out the cylinders. Get it good and warm. I've heard and experienced an engine spit/leak oil due to inactivity or prolonged periods of idle time and cold weather operation not allowing the engine to reach operating temp.

Lately its been about 0 degrees here, so the block heater is being used, but I thought about reducing the warm up idle time to 5-10 minutes instead of 30+...

Long idle warm up times is very hard on our trucks.

The faster it can get up to temp without working it hard the better. I drive mine as soon as it will idle normal, I then just drive it VERY easy until it has reached full operating temperature and the thermostat has opened....twice. I then treat it like it's a Ferrari.

Speaking of warm up...this is what my truck does several times when going down the road...

It'll go from this

To this

And then back down pretty fast...air pocket? It never did this with the el cheapo thermostat, it has a Cummins thermostat now...

Mine does the same fricken thing..... I think it is air in the system. Mine does it if the thermostat closes for a while. I think I'm getting air in the system somehow and it gets pushed up to the thermostat and therefore the thermostat doesn't work correctly.

Ike pull that thermo and take a pair of side cutters to those brass air bleeds in the flange. Cutting those out will allow water to slowly flow past the thermo and let it heat up faster.....stopping that wild swing. Only problem with doing this is sometimes it take a little longer for the engine to come to temp.

This will also let it burp any trapped air because you will always have water passing the thermostat.

Sounds like a plan. The thermostat I got from Tim Worline back at SOP 8 had three brass bleeds on it, and it was a Cummins unit. The one that I bought this time only has two...but I'll cut 'em out.
