I learned my lesson, I will keep it in my lunch bucket when I leave the plant gates, that way I always have it with me.

Got the pump mostly tore down, not sure what's going on just yet, no damage so far. Weird.

Although it was a good opport to look at differences between another pump, 205. So far the biggest difference is the fulcrum assembly. The 205 version seems to have more travel, and some of the profile is different. Meh.

Got the pump completely tore down, no damage. Comparing its H/R assembly against others, it "feels" looser, as in not as a tight fit as the other ones, spins way easier. I ended up putting on a spare complete pump I have, I messed something up with it because all it wants to do is go to full fuel immediately. Pulled it and built a pump from two different cores I had. It doesn't want to fire. Not sure what I'm f'n up here, ran out of time last night. Hopefully I can get something going so I can get my car fixed too...no power brakes with it.

Well, on to pump number three. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, damn thing just won't fire, bleeds out well, just won't pop off. Starter finally gave out too, it's been really weak for a long time.

Enjoying some well earned time off work, so I have been busy working in my tiny garage, building a pump for one of my friends, doing some cleaning/purging and general busy work. Been waiting on a starter and deciding what to do for a pump for my Pile. If you all remember my whole "N.O.S." pump debacle from S.O.P. 10 (wasn't running quite right), I took a look at some of the other cores I had and was comparing differences, everything seemed fine and dandy but I noticed one small thing. The slide collar on the rotor was reversed compared to all the others I had. Took a caliper to it just to see if there was a difference as to the orientation of it, as in the opening that the fulcrum "ball" sits in. There was. I got it flipped around and put back together...just in time to get a call from the sitter, baby is not feeling well. Get home and there is my starter...well, not quite. Baby is content so I open the box, not the starter I ordered. I thought I was getting a used Cummins reman, but they sent me a greasy el-cheapo reman. A quick phone call confirms that the Cummins reman was junk and they took it upon themselves to substitute it with the one they sent me. They said it works ok, it come off a running engine. Whatever  As long as the damn thing works. I'm still gonna check the contacts and brushes, hopefully I can get a year or two out of it. Hopefully the wife will watch the crib midget so I can get the starter inspected and possibly swaped, and get that other pump on. I'd sure like to get The Pile back on the road.

Update....

Starter works and sounds a lot better than the old one. Got that new pump on, was a flat pain in the arse to get the injectors bled. Once I gave it a big ol whiff of ether, it came to life. Runs damn good, still got to get a governor spring in it, but I took a few thousandths off the AFC foot, and it has a ground NON-IC (75) pin in it.

Figured I'd drive the thing, so I took a trip out to Lenox IA to give Ryker his pump he bought from me. Didn't miss a beat, drove 80 mph most of the time on the interstate, got 17.8mpg on the way out there. Only hiccup was the wiper bushing at the motor arm shelled out a few miles from Lenox, Daniel called Napa in Creston and they had some waiting for me to get on my return trip. Got it all fixed in Creston and had no issues on the trip home.

Tried a new air filter setup, found some metal cased, cone style air filters I found in the scrap bin at work, brand spanking new Caterpillar units. Can't really get a good feel on them just yet, need to get a filter minder plumbed in and see if they can flow a decent amount of air...seemed to do ok on todays trip...

Real good day today

I tell ya Andy, it was flat frustrating at times, trying like hell to get that thing to bleed out and fire.

Oh I've had that issue before. I've unhooked grids and jumped the starter under the hood while I sprayed to get them to fire off. I ran the Duck out of fuel when I first built it and after almost running the battery dead trying to bleed I said f it and broke out the starting fluid. Little hit from the crack can and she stumbled to life

Glad to hear it Ike.

There is a thread on CompD of people putting in mini heim joint in place of the bushings in the wipers. Now they are saying it works real slick.

I still need to put a governor spring in it, I have two. One 3200 and a clipped 4200. Jon, how did you like the 4200 spring?

I LOVED it. Coming from driving V8 vehicles, and 4 cylinder econoboxes, the throttle sensitivity was perfect. Driving around town didn't require 1/2 pedal, just a small push. I also had the rod in the hole closer to the pump so it was sensitive.

I have a 3800 I am putting in when I get everything working right. I expect it to be just as good.

How many coils is it clipped? IIRC, I did 1.5. It was a full 2 coils longer than the 3200 that came out but I remember needing 1/2 coil to bend. IT ended up prefect with the stock throttle rod marks.

I clipped it 2....ish. I used a dial caliper to measure the overall length. Kind of a pain to get the end bent, as I'd clip half a coil, bend, measure, clip again, bend, measure.....several times until it was dead nuts the same length as a stock spring.

Threw that clipped 4200 in, bottomed the fuel screw out, and did some whittling on the throttle lever so it could idle at 900rpm...the old pile really hauls ass! The Super 40 was gated at 30ish psi, with the hose to the wastegate actuator removed, it'll build 42-43 psi. Used my speedometer app on my phone, it has a 1/4 mile feature, got 15 seconds flat. Kinda nice having the old turd up and going again
