Well, been dreading the cycling of the front suspension cause I don't like starting over or being told NO....haha. I set it up for high steer and crossover and I have no, I mean no issues with clearance anywhere. Whoohooo!!

Sure hope I can use this grill instead of the 72. I like this one way better but it's gonna be a tight fit. Picking up a 99-03 I/C tomorrow. Only thing I can see that will go in front of the core support is a condensor. A thin one! This grill is really slanted back toward the truck at the bottom for you Dodge guys.

Question for the diesel geniuses....I have serious clearance problems squishing all this stuff in front of the fan. I picked up a 2000SD I/C and I just dont see any way to get it all in there other than repositioning the engine and notching the firewall.

What do you think about using a really wide but short I/C and mounting it in a custom bumper and use some heavy mesh for protection?

I found a 30x8 I/C pretty easy but I'm going to lose alot of surface area.

Any thoughts any negative performance effects?

Only thing I can think of is not having a fan to pull alot of air through the I/C.

Just thinking outside the box.

If you keep it stock it may keep up but idk.

It'll be a seriously huge amp draw but you could use electric fans on the backside of the cooler. The amps required to run those things isn't much but the start up of them will be pretty high.
At the stage of your build I would guess you'd have plenty of time to figure out how to beef up your electrical/charging systems to handle the required loading.

would electric fans give enough clearance, and remove the engine fan?
92 D350 Cab and Chassis. Auto stock, wiring gremlins. 330k miles
92 W250 Ext cab rotted completely out. Auto, pump maxed, 215 ppump nozzles, Denny T2 pin.
85 D350 single wheel, converted to cummins, getrag, turned up 2 turns and afc screw flush.

I was just talking about fans for cooler alone. If I'm reading correctly (subject to not be the case.....sometimes :) ) he's saying that he was thinking on building a bumper to house the cooler in. That would be way away from tha mechanical fan,which I would keep simply because nothing will cool that motor as effectively.
I think its a solid idea....

I've seen a few intercoolers mounted over the engine with hood scoops or louvers to direct air in as well. I would think you would need a heat shield between the two though.

As you can see the grill slants inward a bunch at the bottom. If I'm to keep a condensor and trans cooler in front of that little tab on the bottom of the core support....I pretty much need to keep the I/C and radiator behind the inner edge. (get it).....I have 10" exactly to the front of the WP pulley.

Looking at a Ron Davis radiator and all set up with elec fans is 7.5 so that leaves me with 2.5 for radiator and I figure you want another inch clearance just for fun and whaaalaaa, I'm way past out of space. I need a custom radiator for some clearance around the power steering box. RD and I'm sure others can cut a 45 on a corner for clearance.

I know I could cut up my upper valance but I'm just trying to keep it as close to stock as possible.

There is a upgrade known as a 3G which uses later model parts on these old Fords so I'm not too worried about the extra power required for fans.

So when your I/C gets clogged or damaged somehow and you lose some of the cooling power...are we just talking reduced engine power? Looking for negatives here.

I think I'm going to undo some stuff to get this right. I'd rather do that than have it look hacked.

You can put a remote mount trans cooler under the truck.

I was just thinking that I have a elec fan up in the barn that is supposed to pull 5000 cfm on high...I'm going to check that out before I go any further.

I'd remove the stock fan, then you can mount things closer and have 2 smaller electrics. You can split them to each side of the stock fan hub to push things back more.

Dug around for info on elec fans and they dont seem to be anywhere near the capacity of the stocker. I decided that I'm just going to forge ahead and see what happens.
