ATT: P PUMP GURUS OR "KNOWLEDGEABLE PERSONS"

Postby ellis93 » Wed Apr 17, 2013 6:47 pm

I'm not opening myself up on the other forums to be criticized or excoriated so I figured I'd open myself up to it here

I need some pointers or suggestions on what mods I should look into doing on my conversion motors pump.....before I install it. I'm kinda curious as to what adjustments to make on the pump that would increase the HP potential and mileage. And since I'll have a 3:08 rear gear to mess with I'll need the torque to be off idle, like our pumps (or as close as I can get), so I'm guessing I really shouldn't try to Jack the time up too high  Like I said I need some pointers

Links to treads elsewhere would be beneficial as well, sometimes google piles a bunch of crappy treads ontop of decent info ;)

160 hp pump, correct? Rack plug, dicking with the plate, star wheel adjustments, delivery valves if you want to get "into" it. About half of that is second hand info that I don't know much about. IMO the P7100 is simpler than the VE, I just don't know it as well

How far do you intend on going?

Caleb....not far.....for now

I just want to make sure I don't miss something simple like the fuel plate sliding and afc adjustments. Kinda looking for maybe opinions on the timing as well,as the truck the motor is coming from was kind of a turd on the lowend. When I say "turd" I'm talking BAD,even with a tightened stall, billet converter (transtar  ). I know that with my little c10 being half as heavy it'll move easier than that but there could be hidden benefits for mileage increases, idk.

This is a 160hp pump.

What is this rack plug thinger ma Bob you speak off? Like for a Mack pump?

Yes, they do call it a Mack rack plug. http://www.competitiondiesel.com/forums ... p?t=112488

It looks like a $1=2hp modification. Savor those my friend. I bet you'll want different governor springs too. It looks like they have a "smoke screw" too, so that may help down low. I just did a search on CompD and found all the above information.

Yeah I knew about the afc adjustments, similar in function.....

The fuel plate and afc have been molested by me a couple of years ago, didn't really notice a difference in the truck other than a little lowend smoke.....I'm talking a little puff  that truck was such a turd on takeoff it had me pushing and pulling on the steering wheel....trying to make my bodies movement to make the truck gain in momentum  ....like a child riding a big wheel

I'll look into that plug some, its gotta help

Yeah, but you have to pull the pump to put it on. Timing is funny on those, turn it up too much and the mileage goes in the huh?. The best I got with my '97 is 16. 4 or 7. The timing is set at 18*, stock is 12, I think. You need special tools to set the timing too. You have to pull the DV and put the adapter and indicator in there to get a reading to set it.
Slide the plate and the AFC housing ahead, put in a plate or grind yours and tune with the AFC to cut smoke. I think mine has a 0 plate in it, it smoke s a little on take off, I need to tighten the AFC some more. The 0 is a little hot, but it's fun. I hope I can pull the camper this summer and melt it down. ;)

I've seen guys take a die grinder to the back of the timing case. I'd do it

Eeeh,I don't think so Tim!

The timing cover is busted anyhow tho, dowel pin took it out along with the oil pump idler,so the pump is coming off anyhow.

Usually I set at 16-18 deg of timing . Timing can be set with a deg wheel . Fuel is enough with stock injectors and fuel plate cut .... give gov springs 1 turn and that will rev to 3500. What else you need to know ? Worked on many a p pump
