Cab swap?

Postby needlenose » Thu May 30, 2013 5:26 pm

Has anyone swapped a 2nd gen cab onto a 1st gen frame? Is it even possible? All the swaps I've found are going the other direction. I understand the fenders, bed, and everything else has to be swapped as well. But, are the frames completely different? Completely infeasible?

I'm in desparate need of a crew or double cab and I dont have $5k to drop on a rusted out 1st gen cab. Where I live I see probably five 1st gens a year. There are 2nd gens everywhere.

Thanks!

Nothing is impossible, with enough time, money, and fabrication, you could do it...but hate to tell ya, might as well buy a 2nd gen if space is what you need, and don't have a bunch of time on your hands...

Ain't that the truth. I've done cab swaps before, but it's always been model-to-model. I've never swapped cabs on different models. I just figured it would be much easier(cheaper) to find some extended cab gen2 gasser and swap the cab, bed, and fenders onto the frame than try to find a worthy gen1 or older donor. There's also the EPA circus that has to be mitigated as well. As I understand it, I can't go forward with my '92, only same year or backwards. Surely running a newer cab wouldn't affect the legality if the rolling chassis, engine, drivetrain, and exhaust are all original.

I was just hoping to find some battle-scarred veteran who could wave me off if it's a stupid undertaking.

If I wanted a 2nd gen cab on a 1st gen......... I would take the 2nd gen, annd then transfer the first gen leafs and front axle over. Then if I wanted the motor, that would be an easy swap.

The reality is 90% of a 2nd gen is superior....... just not the fron ends.
